Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER WHO NEVER EXISTEDThe basement became completely silent.

Richard could hear only one thing.

His own heartbeat.

The recording continued playing.

Emily’s voice echoed through the hidden room.

“Richard, do not trust my brother.”

Richard stared at Jonathan.

His mind refused to accept the words.

My brother.

Those two words changed everything.

Because Jonathan had spent his entire life telling everyone the same story.

That he and Richard were brothers.

That they grew up together.

That their parents raised them under the same roof.

That they shared the same blood.

But Emily had just said something impossible.

Jonathan was not who he claimed to be.

Richard stepped away slowly.

“Who are you?”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

For the first time since Richard had known him, Jonathan looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Afraid.

Richard noticed.

And that fear confirmed everything.

“You heard her.”

His voice became colder.

“Answer me.”

Jonathan looked toward the speaker.

The recording had stopped.

Then he looked back at Richard.

“Your wife always knew how to create drama.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Don’t talk about Emily.”

Jonathan smiled faintly.

“Still protecting her.”

“She’s been dead for years, Richard.”

“And she’s still smarter than you.”

The words hit Jonathan.

His smile disappeared.

Sophie stood behind Richard, holding his jacket tightly.

“Daddy
”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Is Uncle Jonathan bad?”

Richard looked down at his daughter.

He wanted to lie.

He wanted to tell her everything was okay.

But he had spent too many years believing lies.

“No one gets to hurt you again.”

That was the only promise he could make.

Jonathan looked at Sophie.

Something strange appeared in his eyes.

Not anger.

Possession.

Richard immediately noticed.

“Don’t look at her like that.”

Jonathan looked back.

“You have no idea what she is.”

Richard stepped forward.

“She’s my daughter.”

“No.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“She’s the last piece.”

Richard froze.

“The last piece of what?”

Jonathan looked at the wooden box.

“What Emily stole.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“She didn’t steal anything.”

Jonathan laughed quietly.

“You still believe she was innocent.”

“She was.”

Jonathan looked almost disappointed.

“You never questioned anything.”

“Not your father.”

“Not Emily.”

“Not even me.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Because I trusted my family.”

Jonathan smiled.

“That was your weakness.”

The recording suddenly activated again.

Everyone turned.

Emily’s voice filled the basement.

“If Jonathan is there, then he already knows about the box.”

Richard looked toward the speaker.

“But he does not know everything.”

Jonathan’s face changed.

Emily continued.

“The person who knows the truth is the one who was there before anyone else.”

Richard frowned.

Before anyone else?

What did that mean?

Then Emily said:

“Richard, open the box.”

Jonathan immediately moved.

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

That reaction was enough.

He walked toward the wooden box.

Jonathan stepped forward.

“Richard, listen to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what you’re opening.”

Richard stopped.

“Neither do you.”

A moment of silence.

Then Jonathan whispered:

“You really think Emily loved you enough to tell you everything?”

Richard looked at him.

“She trusted me.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“She used you.”

Richard’s face changed.

“What?”

“She knew you would protect her secret.”

Richard walked closer.

“Say that again.”

Jonathan smiled.

“She never told you the truth because she knew you couldn’t handle it.”

Richard grabbed the box.

Jonathan’s voice became urgent.

“Don’t open it.”

Richard looked at him.

“Why?”

No answer.

“Why are you afraid?”

Jonathan stared at the box.

Then quietly said:

“Because once you open it
”

A pause.

“You can never go back.”

Richard opened the lock.

Inside was not money.

Not jewelry.

Not documents.

The first thing he saw was a photograph.

A family photograph.

Richard picked it up.

His hands started shaking.

It was taken twenty-eight years earlier.

A younger version of his father stood in the center.

Beside him was Richard’s mother.

Beside them was a young man.

Someone Richard recognized.

But not Jonathan.

Another man.

Richard looked closer.

The young man had the same eyes as Jonathan.

The same scar near his eyebrow.

Richard’s breathing stopped.

“What is this?”

Jonathan said nothing.

Richard looked at him.

“Who is he?”

Jonathan remained silent.

The second item inside the box was a birth certificate.

Richard picked it up.

Then froze.

The name on the paper made his stomach drop.

Nathaniel Cross.

Not Jonathan Sterling.

Richard looked up.

“Nathaniel?”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

The secret was finally exposed.

“My real name.”

The room went cold.

Richard stared.

“You’re not my brother.”

Jonathan looked away.

“No.”

“Then who are you?”

A long silence followed.

Then he answered.

“Your father’s son.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Your half-brother.”

The words hit harder than Richard expected.

“My father had another child?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Before he married your mother.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“He would have told me.”

Jonathan laughed.

“Would he?”

“He spent his entire life hiding things from you.”

Richard looked at the birth certificate.

Nathaniel Cross.

A name he had never heard.

A brother he never knew existed.

A person who had been living beside him for years.

“Why?”

Jonathan’s expression changed.

“Because your father chose you.”

Richard looked confused.

“What?”

“He gave you his name.”

“He gave you the company.”

“He gave you everything.”

Jonathan’s voice became bitter.

“And he erased me.”

Richard stared.

“That’s why you did this?”

Jonathan’s eyes hardened.

“I spent my entire life watching you receive everything I was denied.”

“You had a family.”

“You had respect.”

“You had Emily.”

Richard stepped back.

“You were jealous.”

Jonathan laughed.

“Jealous?”

“No.”

“I was angry.”

The room became silent.

“I didn’t want your life.”

Jonathan looked at Sophie.

“I wanted what your father took from me.”

Richard immediately moved in front of Sophie.

“You stay away from her.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Your father didn’t just leave me out of the family.”

“He hid something from all of us.”

Richard looked at the box.

“What?”

Jonathan pointed inside.

Richard looked down.

Under the documents was another envelope.

Different handwriting.

Not Emily’s.

His father’s.

Richard opened it.

The first sentence made his entire body freeze.

Richard, if you are reading this, then Nathaniel has already found you.

Richard looked at Jonathan.

Jonathan looked away.

The letter continued.

I need you to understand something. Nathaniel is not your enemy because of what happened in the past.

A pause.

Richard kept reading.

He is your enemy because he knows what your mother and I hid from him.

Richard’s heart raced.

His mother and father hid something.

From Jonathan.

From everyone.

The next line made him stop breathing.

The real reason Emily died was because she discovered the truth about Sophie’s inheritance.

Richard looked at Sophie.

His daughter.

Inheritance?

What inheritance?

The letter continued.

Sophie is not just my granddaughter.

Richard’s hands shook.

She is the legal owner of everything I built.

Silence.

Jonathan looked at Richard.

And smiled.

Because he knew.

The truth was finally out.

Sophie was not just Richard’s daughter.

May you like

She was the key to an empire.

And someone had spent years trying to control her.
