Chapter 12 - THE BASEMENT THAT WAS NEVER DESTROYEDThe countdown continued.

04:59:58

04:59:57

Richard stared at the numbers on the screen.

Four hours.

That was all the time he had.

Four hours before someone made their move.

Four hours before Sophie’s life could change forever.

He looked at the people standing around him.

Jonathan.

Eleanor.

Two people who had spent years hiding pieces of the truth.

Two people who had helped create the nightmare surrounding his family.

And yet...

They were the only people who knew where to start looking.

Richard picked up his phone.

“We’re going to my father’s old office.”

Jonathan immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“No?”

Jonathan stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what you’re walking into.”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“My daughter is there.”

“That place is not a building anymore.”

“It’s a trap.”

Richard laughed coldly.

“Everything has been a trap.”

He pointed toward the basement.

“The house.”

“The cameras.”

“The lies.”

He looked at Jonathan.

“The only difference now is that I know.”

Jonathan remained silent.

Richard turned toward Eleanor.

“You’re coming with us.”

Her expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because you know more than you’re telling me.”

Eleanor looked away.

Richard stepped closer.

“And because if anything happens to Sophie
”

His voice became dangerously quiet.

“You will answer for every secret you buried.”

Eleanor swallowed.

For the first time...

She looked old.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“I never wanted this.”

Richard stared.

“Everyone says that.”

“I know.”

She looked at Sophie.

“I know how it sounds.”

“Because it is what people say when they realize they made the wrong choice.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“You’re right.”

The admission surprised him.

“I made mistakes.”

Richard said nothing.

“But Emily made mistakes too.”

His expression changed.

“Do not blame Emily.”

“I’m not.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I’m telling you she knew the danger.”

“She knew what she was fighting.”

“She knew she might not survive.”

Richard froze.

“You knew she was in danger?”

Eleanor looked down.

“Yes.”

The answer cut deeper than any lie.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you let her die?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to stop it.”

Richard stepped closer.

“But you failed.”

A long silence.

“Yes.”

The honesty made it worse.

Richard looked away.

He wanted to hate her.

It would have been easier.

But he saw something in her face.

Regret.

The kind that never left.

“Tell me everything.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“Before we go.”

She took a deep breath.

“Your father built The Circle with five people.”

“Marcus Vale was one of them.”

“Your father trusted him more than anyone.”

Jonathan spoke quietly.

“Until he realized Marcus wanted control.”

Richard looked at him.

“And you knew?”

Jonathan nodded.

“My father used me.”

“How?”

Jonathan looked at Sophie.

“Because I was the person nobody suspected.”

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan sighed.

“I was sent away when I was young.”

“My father told everyone I didn’t exist.”

“Then years later, he brought me back.”

“Not as a son.”

“As an employee.”

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

“He used you.”

“Yes.”

Jonathan looked bitter.

“He taught me everything.”

“How to manipulate people.”

“How to hide money.”

“How to destroy enemies.”

A pause.

“And then he used those skills against me.”

Richard understood.

Jonathan wasn’t innocent.

But he wasn’t the mastermind either.

He was another person damaged by the same machine.

Richard looked at the countdown.

04:42:11

“We’re wasting time.”

They left the old house twenty minutes later.

Richard refused to leave Sophie behind.

She sat beside him in the SUV, holding his hand tightly.

The entire drive was silent.

Until Sophie spoke.

“Daddy?”

Richard looked down.

“Yes?”

“Was Mommy scared?”

The question nearly broke him.

He looked out the window.

“Yes.”

Sophie’s eyes filled with sadness.

“But she was brave.”

Richard nodded.

“She was the bravest person I knew.”

Sophie held her rabbit closer.

“She told me something.”

Richard turned immediately.

“What?”

Sophie hesitated.

“When I was little.”

“She said if anything bad happened
”

Richard’s heart started racing.

“What did she say?”

Sophie looked at him.

“She said Daddy would know where to look.”

Richard froze.

“Where to look?”

Sophie nodded.

“She said you were the only person who would understand.”

Richard looked forward.

Because Emily had left clues.

For him.

For Sophie.

She knew someone might come after them.

She had prepared.

The SUV finally stopped.

Richard looked out the window.

The building was abandoned.

Old.

Broken.

The sign had fallen years ago.

But Richard recognized it.

Sterling Holdings.

The place where his father built his empire.

The place everyone said burned down.

Jonathan looked at the building.

“The basement entrance is underneath.”

Richard frowned.

“There is no basement.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“That’s what they wanted people to believe.”

They entered through a broken side door.

The inside was dark.

Dust covered everything.

But someone had been there recently.

Fresh footprints.

Richard noticed immediately.

“They’re here.”

Jonathan nodded.

They moved deeper into the building.

Past old offices.

Past empty rooms.

Until they reached the elevator.

It had no power.

Jonathan opened a hidden panel beside it.

A keypad appeared.

Richard stared.

“My father built secret rooms under his own building?”

Jonathan nodded.

“He trusted nobody.”

Richard looked at him.

“Not even family.”

Jonathan pressed a code.

The elevator suddenly powered on.

The doors opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

Not an elevator.

A private access chamber.

They stepped inside.

The doors closed.

And the elevator began moving down.

Lower.

And lower.

Richard looked at the floor numbers.

There were no numbers.

Only letters.

B1.

B2.

B3.

Then...

B7.

Richard looked at Jonathan.

“How deep does this go?”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

And Richard froze.

Because the room below was not abandoned.

It was active.

Computers were running.

Monitors covered the walls.

Files were everywhere.

And in the center of the room...

Was a chair.

A child-sized chair.

Richard’s blood turned cold.

“No.”

Jonathan looked around.

His face changed.

“This wasn’t here before.”

Richard walked closer.

On the chair was Sophie’s stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit she was holding minutes earlier.

Richard immediately turned around.

“Sophie?”

She was still beside him.

Safe.

Confused.

Then a speaker above them turned on.

A man’s voice filled the room.

“Welcome back, Richard.”

Everyone froze.

The voice was calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

Richard looked around.

“Marcus Vale?”

A soft laugh echoed through the room.

“Yes.”

Richard’s fists tightened.

“Where is my daughter?”

The voice answered:

“Closer than you think.”

The lights suddenly turned on.

A large screen activated.

And Richard saw something that made his entire body go cold.

Live footage.

Vanessa.

Standing in another room.

Holding Sophie’s original inheritance documents.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was a man Richard had never met.

Until he saw his face.

The same eyes.

The same expression.

The same cold smile.

Jonathan stepped backward.

“No
”

Richard looked at him.

“Who is that?”

Jonathan whispered:

“My father.”

Richard froze.

“Your father is dead.”

Jonathan stared at the screen.

“He was supposed to be.”

The man on the screen looked directly into the camera.

As if he could see Richard.

Then he smiled.

“Hello, Richard.”

A pause.

“You finally found the basement.”

The screen zoomed closer.

And the man spoke the words that changed everything.

“But you’re too late.”

The countdown on Richard’s phone suddenly changed.

01:00:00

One hour left.

May you like

And somewhere inside the building...

Sophie’s future was about to be decided.
