Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER WHO KNEW TOO MUCHRichard stared at the frozen image on his computer screen.

Jonathan Sterling.

His own brother.

The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.

The man who had held Sophie when she was a baby.

The man who always said:

“She’s lucky to have a father like you.”

Now Richard was watching him secretly planning a future without him.

Without Sophie.

His fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.

“Custody papers?”

The words came out quietly.

But the anger behind them was impossible to hide.

Richard replayed the recording.

Again.

And again.

He needed to know if he had misunderstood.

Maybe Jonathan was talking about something else.

Maybe there was another explanation.

But every time the video played, the truth became clearer.

Vanessa stood beside Jonathan in the garage.

The two of them weren’t arguing.

They weren’t discussing a problem.

They were planning.

Jonathan looked toward the security camera before speaking.

“Richard trusts me.”

Vanessa smiled.

“That’s why this works.”

Richard stopped the video.

His stomach turned.

He leaned back in his chair.

For years, he had believed his family was the one place where he was safe.

His parents had raised him to believe family meant loyalty.

Family meant protection.

Family meant you never turned your back on each other.

But now he wondered if he had confused family with familiarity.

Because sometimes the people closest to you were the ones who knew exactly where to hurt you.

His phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

Richard opened it.

DON’T CONFRONT THEM YET.

His eyes narrowed.

Another message appeared.

IF THEY KNOW YOU KNOW, SOPHIE WILL BE IN MORE DANGER.

Richard immediately stood.

Someone was watching.

Again.

He typed a response.

WHO ARE YOU?

The reply came within seconds.

SOMEONE WHO TRIED TO WARN YOU BEFORE.

Richard frowned.

Before?

He searched through his old messages.

Nothing.

Then another message arrived.

CHECK YOUR OFFICE DRAWER. THE ONE YOU NEVER USE.

Richard looked toward the wooden cabinet beside his desk.

The bottom drawer.

He rarely opened it.

He walked over slowly.

Every instinct told him this was dangerous.

But he opened it anyway.

Inside were old documents.

Tax papers.

Old contracts.

And beneath them...

An envelope.

His name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

Richard Sterling.

His heart started beating faster.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A picture of Sophie.

Taken years ago.

She was two years old.

Smiling.

Standing beside Vanessa.

On the back of the photo were five words.

SHE WAS WATCHING HER THEN.

Richard froze.

Then he found another item inside.

A small flash drive.

His phone buzzed again.

PLAY IT ALONE.

Richard looked around the room.

Then locked the door.

He inserted the flash drive into his computer.

A single video file appeared.

SOPHIE_BEFORE_VANESSA_MOVED_IN

Richard clicked.

The screen showed his house.

His old house.

Before Vanessa lived there.

Sophie was sitting on the living room floor with her toys.

Richard remembered that day.

He had been at work.

His wife had taken the video.

Sophie was laughing.

Happy.

Then the front door opened.

Vanessa walked inside.

Richard’s expression changed.

This was before their engagement.

Before he trusted her completely.

She wasn’t supposed to be alone with Sophie.

But she was.

On the screen, Vanessa sat beside the little girl.

“Do you like me?”

Sophie smiled.

“Yes.”

“Would you like me to be your mommy?”

The little girl looked confused.

“My mommy is in heaven.”

Vanessa smiled.

“I know.”

A pause.

“But your daddy needs someone new.”

Sophie nodded.

“Daddy says you’re nice.”

Vanessa touched her hair.

“Good.”

Then her voice changed.

“Because if you want me to stay
”

Sophie looked up.

“You have to help me.”

Richard leaned closer.

The same words.

The same pattern.

Again.

“What do you need help with?” Sophie asked.

Vanessa looked toward the camera.

Almost like she knew someone might watch someday.

“You need to make your daddy listen to me.”

“How?”

Vanessa smiled.

“By being a good girl.”

The video ended.

Richard sat completely still.

This wasn’t a sudden change.

Vanessa hadn’t become cruel after the engagement.

She had been testing Sophie from the beginning.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Richard removed the flash drive.

Then he heard something outside his office.

A floorboard creaking.

Someone was there.

He quickly turned off the screen.

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

“Richard?”

Vanessa’s voice.

He didn’t answer immediately.

“What do you want?”

The door opened slightly.

She looked inside.

“Are you hiding something from me now?”

Richard stared at her.

The irony almost made him laugh.

“Interesting question.”

Vanessa stepped inside.

“You’re acting strange.”

“No.”

“I’m acting like someone who just discovered his fiancĂ©e has been lying to him.”

Her expression changed.

Only briefly.

But enough.

“What did you discover?”

Richard noticed.

She didn’t ask if he was okay.

She asked what he knew.

“I saw the cameras.”

Vanessa went quiet.

“What cameras?”

“The ones you didn’t know about.”

Her face lost color.

“You recorded me?”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“You recorded yourself.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“Richard, you need to understand something.”

“No.”

He stood.

“You need to understand something.”

He walked closer.

“You hurt my daughter.”

“I didn’t hurt her.”

“You threatened her.”

“I disciplined her.”

“You tried to turn her against me.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

Richard stared.

“Is that another threat?”

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“It’s a warning.”

“From who?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Richard already knew.

“Jonathan?”

The silence answered for her.

Vanessa looked shocked.

Only for a second.

Then she recovered.

“You shouldn’t say his name.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because you don’t understand the situation.”

“Then explain it.”

No answer.

“Explain why my brother wants custody of my daughter.”

Vanessa froze.

Richard watched her carefully.

There it was.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Where did you hear that?”

Richard smiled coldly.

“So it’s true.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Richard
”

“No.”

He pointed toward the door.

“Get out.”

Her face hardened.

“You can’t just throw me away.”

“I can.”

“You need me.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

“I needed someone who loved my daughter.”

His voice became quiet.

“But I invited someone who wanted to replace her.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she said something that made his blood run cold.

“You think Jonathan wants Sophie?”

A pause.

“He doesn’t.”

Richard frowned.

“Then what does he want?”

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

Toward Sophie’s room.

And whispered:

“He wants what Sophie’s mother left behind.”

Richard froze.

“My daughter’s mother?”

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“She left something valuable.”

“What?”

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“A secret.”

Before Richard could ask another question...

The lights in the house suddenly went out.

Everything became dark.

Then the security alarm started screaming.

Richard immediately moved toward Sophie’s room.

“Sophie!”

No answer.

He ran upstairs.

The bedroom door was open.

The bed was empty.

The window was unlocked.

Cold air entered the room.

Richard’s heart stopped.

On Sophie’s pillow was a note.

Three words.

Written in black ink.

COME FIND HER.

Richard grabbed the paper.

And underneath those words was another message.

May you like

One that made his entire body go cold.

OR YOU’LL NEVER SEE YOUR DAUGHTER AGAIN.
