What Valentina Knew.....
The entire dining room fell into stunned, complete silence, every guest's attention fixed on my daughter's small, accusing finger and my fiancée's suddenly ashen expression.
""Valentina,"" I said carefully, reaching for her small hand, ""sweetheart, what do you mean?""
""Rosa,"" Valentina said again, more firmly this time, gesturing toward our longtime housekeeper who stood frozen near the dining room's entrance. ""I heard Grandma Carmen talking to Aunt Beatriz. She said Rosa carried me in her tummy, not Isabella.""
My fiancée, Isabella, pressed her hand protectively against her own considerably pregnant belly, her expression cycling rapidly through confusion toward something considerably more devastating.
""Marco,"" Isabella said quietly, ""what is she talking about?""
I felt the entire room's attention pressing against me, understanding with sickening clarity that whatever careful, protective narrative my own mother had apparently constructed regarding Valentina's origins was about to collapse entirely in front of two hundred wedding guests.
""I need everyone to give us a moment,"" I said, rising slowly, my voice carrying considerably less authority than I intended given my own overwhelming shock.
Rosa, standing near the doorway, had gone completely pale, tears already streaming down her face. ""Mr. Reyes,"" she said quietly, ""I'm so sorry. I never wanted her to discover this way.""
""Discover what, exactly?"" I asked, though some devastating part of me already understood the answer forming.

""Marco,"" my mother, Carmen, said from her own seat nearby, her earlier composed dignity cracking visibly, ""we need to discuss this privately.""
""We're discussing it now,"" I said firmly. ""Mama, is what Valentina just said actually true?""
