Chapter 18 - CARMEN'S TESTIMONY

Carmen eventually pleaded guilty to fraud, conspiracy, forgery, obstruction, and reckless conduct tied to Javier's death.

Beatriz pleaded guilty to manslaughter and kidnapping.

Leon received a reduced sentence for cooperation and lost his medical license permanently.

Isabella settled Rosa's civil claim against her personally.

Not with Reyes money.

With her own.

Rosa accepted because accountability did not require pretending money was dirty.

At Carmen's sentencing, she asked to speak.

"I loved my family."

The judge listened.

"So did many of the people you harmed."

"I thought if I kept everyone in place, nothing would fall apart."

Carmen received eleven years.

Beatriz received nine.

Leon received four.

The corporate cases continued.

Marco was not charged.

"I did not know about the fertility fraud. I did know my mother controlled too much of my life, my house, and my company. I accepted that because it was convenient."

Reporters went quiet.

"I missed what was happening to people with less power than me."

She believed that part.

Not because he said it.

Because he had stopped demanding credit for changing.

Months later, Isabella's civil deposition became public.

A lawyer asked why she stayed silent after seeing Rosa's DNA result.

"Because I loved Valentina and confused love with ownership."

That sentence hurt.

It was also true.

Isabella and Marco finalized a parenting agreement for Mateo.

No wedding.

No hidden reunion.

Maybe one day they would become friends.

Maybe not.

Rosa sometimes hated that.

One Friday, Valentina came home from school angry.

A classmate said Rosa was "the maid who stole her back."

"No lawyers."

"What then?"

Rosa knelt in front of Valentina.

"What did you say?"

Valentina lifted her chin.

"I said you didn't steal me."

"Good."

"I said they stole your name."

"And now you got it back."

Then she pulled a school paper from her backpack.

Family Heritage Project.

Then Rosa.

"I need a bigger paper."
