Chapter 7 - LEON MENDEZ

He surrendered when federal agents approached.
No chase.
No gun.
Just a man tired of running.
Marco met him through glass.
"I'm sorry."
"That word is cheap."
"I know."
Leon admitted the entire procedure.
Carmen ordered him to inseminate Rosa after Isabella's embryo transfer failed.
He used Marco's frozen sample from the fertility program.
It was not.
"Why?" Marco asked.
"Money."
Leon did not decorate it.
"Your mother paid my debts. Then she owned me."
He falsified forms.
Changed lab labels.
Created Isabella's fake maternity file.
After Valentina was born, Javier discovered it.
"He told me to confess."
"Then he died."
"What happened to Javier Reyes?"
Leon said he prescribed a medication Carmen requested for "stress-related tachycardia."
The dose was unusually high.
Javier collapsed that night.
"Did you know it could kill him?"
"Yes."
Not to comfort him.
To stop him from doing something stupid.
"I didn't give him the pills."
"Who did?"
Silence.
"Leon."
"Beatriz."
Not grief.
Illusion.
Beatriz had protected Carmen's plan by killing Javier.
When confronted, she denied ordering murder.
"I wanted him quiet, not dead."
"That is not the defense you think it is."
Leon had more.
Isabella's signature on the maternity acknowledgment was authentic.
Dated one week after Rosa's DNA report was created.
Her face went white.
"You signed after you knew."
She whispered, "Yes."
The room went silent.
"I was twenty-nine. Carmen said Rosa had been paid. She said Valentina needed stability."
"You held my daughter while I worked in your kitchen."
"I loved her."
Rosa's voice sharpened.
"So did I."
Then Leon told them why the wedding date mattered.
The next morning, at 10:00 a.m., the Founder Trust would undergo its five-year maternal verification audit.
If Isabella married Marco before the audit and remained listed as legal mother, her trusteeship would become presumptively permanent unless challenged in court.

"This wasn't a wedding."
"It was a deadline."
