Chapter 8 - EIGHT IN THE MORNING

At 6:15 a.m., florists arrived.
At 6:20, Marco canceled the wedding.
At 6:23, Carmen tried to overrule him.
She discovered the household no longer listened.
"I canceled it."
"I know."
He expected anger.
That surprised him.
"I don't deserve to marry you today."
"No."
"Did you ever intend to tell me?"
"After the audit."
"Always after."
Isabella wiped her face.
"Carmen told me Rosa would use Valentina to take your money."
"Did Rosa ever ask for money?"
"No."
"Did she ever threaten you?"
"No."
"Did she ever try to take Valentina?"
"No."
"Then what exactly were you afraid of?"
"That if you knew another woman gave you your first child, I would become temporary."
There it was.
Not money.
Not law.
Fear.
Still selfish.
Still damaging.
But human.
"I loved Valentina from the minute they put her in my arms."
"I believe you."
Tears spilled down her face.
"That doesn't make what I did right."
"No."
The trust audit began at 10:00 under court supervision.
Rosa submitted DNA.
Marco submitted DNA.
Valentina's sample matched both.
Isabella was excluded.
The legal record could no longer pretend.
Jonah filed an emergency petition recognizing Rosa's maternal claim and freezing all trust votes made under false co-trusteeship.
"This will destroy Reyes Global."
"Then maybe Reyes Global has been standing on the wrong thing."
The judge appointed a temporary independent trustee.
Neither Marco nor Rosa could use Valentina's shares until the court determined the fraud.
Good.
Thirty-four million dollars.
Moved into Reyes family holding companies.
Approved by Isabella as maternal co-trustee.
"I never saw these."
Jonah pulled the signature logs.
Her electronic credential approved every one.
"Carmen had my token."
Carmen did not deny it.
The money funded acquisitions that increased Carmen's personal voting power.
Rosa whispered, "Valentina wasn't only an heir."
Marco answered, "She was financing them."
Two million dollars.
Recipient:
SANTOS FAMILY MEDICAL FOUNDATION.

"That's my last name."
"I've never heard of that foundation."
