Chapter 15 - TWO CHILDREN, TWO TRUTHS

The baby arrived at 3:18 a.m.

A boy.

Mateo Javier Reyes.

Healthy.

Loud.

Angry at the world.

Not because blood felt magical.

Because after everything, a child had arrived without a secret being written over him.

"Tell him the truth."

"About what?"

"Everything. Age appropriate. But everything."

Valentina came later with Rosa.

"He's tiny."

"You were smaller," Rosa said.

"Did you see me when I was this tiny?"

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Two minutes."

"That's not long."

"No."

No dramatic speech.

No instant repair.

Just contact.

Pain moved across her face.

After a moment she said, "You can still love her."

"I know."

"But love doesn't make you her mother on paper."

"I know."

"Good."

That boundary mattered.

Marco filed an amended birth record request for Valentina.

Mother: Rosa Elena Santos.

Father: Marco Javier Reyes.

A notation preserved Isabella's role as psychological parent for future custody review.

The child therapist recommended continued supervised family contact while Valentina adjusted.

No one got erased.

Then Carmen was arrested.

Not for Javier's murder yet.

For conspiracy, fertility fraud, document forgery, trust fraud, and obstruction.

Beatriz remained jailed.

Isabella faced civil exposure for signing the false maternity acknowledgment.

She accepted it.

No quiet settlement.

No immunity bought through marriage.

The wedding never happened.

Marco and Isabella separated.

They would co-parent Mateo.

Valentina would see Isabella according to the therapist's plan.

It was messy.

Real families often were.

Then Brooks brought Marco one final item from Carmen's safe.

A handwritten letter from Arturo Reyes, written before he died.

Carmen had hidden it.

To Rosa, if Carmen ever tells you that you don't belong:

Your mother was my daughter even when I was too proud to admit it.

Arturo confessed he regretted disowning Elena Santos.

He intended to restore her branch.

"She didn't just erase me."

"She erased your mother first."
