Chapter 6 - JAVIER'S RECORDING

The recording was six years old.
Tired.
Angry.
Alive.
"If you're watching this, Carmen stopped me."
Javier said he discovered the fertility scheme by accident.
He overheard Leon Mendez arguing with Carmen.
Isabella's last viable embryo had failed.
Carmen refused to accept it.
Arturo Reyes was dying.
The Founder Trust required a biological firstborn to lock Marco's branch into permanent voting control.
Without a child, twenty-six percent would pass to Marco's cousin Rafael.
Carmen could not allow that.
So she ordered Leon to use Rosa's egg and Marco's stored sperm sample.
Without Rosa's informed consent.
Without Marco's knowledge.
Without Isabella's genetic material.
Her face had gone empty.
He whispered, "They used my sample?"
"I didn't know until much later."
Javier continued.
"I confronted Carmen. She said the child would be loved. She said blood was blood."
"I told her love without consent is ownership."
The same family lesson again.
Javier planned to tell Marco and report the clinic.
Then he died two days later.
Heart attack.
"Your father had a bad heart."
"Did he?"
Brooks ordered Javier's medical records pulled.
His private cardiologist had been Dr. Leon Mendez.
Same doctor.
The recording continued.
Javier said Leon wanted immunity.
He kept copies.
One set hidden under the clinic.
One set in a bank box.
Police asked her.
She refused.
Then Rosa spoke.
"There's a garden wall behind the recovery house."
"What?"
"Beatriz used to meet Leon there."
They searched.
Inside a waterproof tube buried behind loose stone were bank documents.
Payments from a Reyes family account to Leon.
Monthly.
For four years after Valentina's birth.
The final payment was labeled:
CLOSURE.
"What does closure mean?"
"I didn't kill Leon."
Marco asked, "Did Beatriz?"
A photograph.
Leon Mendez standing beside a motel sign in New Mexico.
Date stamp:
Three months ago.
Rosa gasped.
"He's alive."
And on Leon's wrist was the same red hospital band Rosa remembered from the night Valentina was born.

Someone had kept him hidden.
Someone still needed him.
