Chapter 1 - WHAT VALENTINA KNEW

"Rosa carried me in her tummy."
Two hundred guests stopped breathing.
Valentina stood beside him in a white flower-girl dress, pointing across the ballroom at Rosa, the housekeeper who had worked for the Reyes family since before Valentina was born.
"Sweetheart," Marco said, forcing his voice to stay calm, "what did you say?"
Valentina pointed again.
"Grandma Carmen told Aunt Beatriz. She said Rosa had me in her tummy, not Isabella."
Marco's fiancée, Isabella Cruz, pressed one hand over her pregnant belly.
Her face went white.
"Marco."
A tray shook in her hands.
Then she set it down before she dropped it.
Carmen Reyes had ruled their family with the same quiet certainty she used in board meetings.
Tonight, that certainty cracked.
"Valentina misunderstood," Carmen said.
"No, I didn't," Valentina answered.
A nervous sound moved through the room.
Marco crouched in front of his daughter.
"Where did you hear this?"
"In Grandma's room. Aunt Beatriz said Rosa should've left after I was born. Grandma said keeping her close was safer."
"Rosa."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Reyes."
"Sorry for what?"
Carmen rose sharply.
"Marco, not here."
He did not look at her.
"Rosa."
Rosa wiped her face.
"I never wanted Valentina to learn like this."
Isabella whispered, "Learn what?"
"Is it true?"
"We can discuss this privately."
"We're discussing it now."
Guests stared.
Phones were already coming out.
Marco did not care.
"Did Rosa carry my daughter?"
Silence.
Then Carmen said, "Yes."
Isabella staggered back.
Marco caught the chair beside him.
Five years of birthdays, pediatric appointments, family portraits, and school forms shifted under his feet.
"You were the surrogate?"
Rosa's mouth trembled.
"That's what they told me."
"What does that mean?"
Rosa reached inside her apron and pulled out a folded paper she had hidden there for years.
A laboratory report.
She placed it on the table.
"I found this three months after Valentina was born."
MATERNAL GENETIC MATCH: ROSA ELENA SANTOS.
Probability of biological maternity: 99.9996%.
Isabella made a broken sound.
Then at his mother.
"Rosa wasn't just the woman who carried her."
May you like
Marco's voice dropped.
"She's Valentina's biological mother."
