Chapter 11 - WHY ROSA STAYED

Now she understood.

Close enough to monitor.

Poor enough to control.

Present enough that Valentina would never feel an unexplained absence.

But never named.

Valentina's therapist, Dr. Maya Chen, explained the risk.

"Do not tell her one mother is real and one is fake."

"Isabella raised her."

"Yes."

Marco asked, "What do we call Rosa?"

Dr. Chen looked at Valentina.

"We ask her."

"Rosa."

Then she added, "And maybe Mama Rosa when I want."

No one corrected Valentina.

Meanwhile, Beatriz agreed to cooperate.

She wanted a reduced sentence.

Beatriz denied intending to kill him.

Leon supplied pills.

Beatriz crushed them into tea.

Javier's heart stopped.

"Did you call 911 immediately?"

No.

Why?

Carmen wanted his office searched first.

They removed the clinic file.

Marco listened from behind glass.

"We were protecting Carmen."

Inside were original lab sheets.

Rosa's hormone panels.

Marco's sperm sample chain.

Isabella's failed embryos.

And one unexpected file.

VALENTINA REYES - CORD BLOOD.

"Why keep that?"

Leon explained.

Because the baby's cord blood had been genetically tested at birth.

No ambiguity.

No mistake.

No late discovery.

Then Leon mentioned another result.

A hereditary marker found in Valentina.

Not dangerous.

But unusual.

And in someone else.

"Me?"

"No."

The marker was mitochondrial.

Maternal line only.

It matched Rosa's mother.

And a sample already stored in the Reyes medical archive.

Carmen Reyes.

The room went silent.

"Why would Carmen share my maternal marker?"

May you like

"Because Carmen is not just Marco's mother."

"She's your mother's sister."
