Chapter 9 - THE FOUNDATION IN ROSA'S NAME

The Santos Family Medical Foundation existed only on paper.

No office.

No staff.

No patients.

Yet it had received two million dollars from Valentina's trust.

Someone had used Rosa's name to create a future weapon.

Jonah explained.

"If Rosa ever claimed maternity, Carmen could say she had already been paid through a foundation."

"So I become the greedy surrogate."

The account's authorized signer was Beatriz.

Police added fraud charges.

Then the accountants traced one outgoing payment.

Eight hundred thousand dollars to Rosa's mother's heart surgeon.

"Her surgery cost less than one hundred thousand."

The rest went to a shell company controlled by Leon Mendez.

Every kindness had been converted into evidence.

"I need air."

"Don't."

"I wasn't going to touch you."

"Good."

"For five years I thought maybe I was weak."

"I told myself I should have fought harder after Valentina was born. I should have taken the papers to a lawyer. I should have quit."

"You were drugged, lied to, and financially trapped."

"And you were five rooms away."

The sentence landed.

He had been busy closing a merger.

"I should have asked more questions."

"Yes."

No absolution.

He appreciated that.

"I don't want Valentina taken from Isabella."

"After what she did?"

"Valentina loves her."

Rosa's voice cracked.

"Children shouldn't have to lose people just because adults finally tell the truth."

It meant attachment mattered.

Rosa wanted a child therapist involved.

A transition.

No dramatic replacement.

Then Valentina came outside holding a drawing.

Three women.

One man.

Two children.

"Who is this?" Marco asked.

Valentina pointed.

"Rosa. Isabella. Grandma Carmen."

"What are they doing?"

"Carmen is far away."

Then Valentina pointed to Isabella.

"She looks sad."

"And Rosa?"

"She's staying."

Before anyone could answer, Jonah ran outside.

"Marco."

"What?"

"We found the original hospital surrender."

Rosa went still.

"The signature isn't hers."

"It's Carmen's handwriting."
