Chapter 19 - THE FAMILY TREE

Not the old Reyes dining room.
Rosa's apartment.
Construction paper.
Markers.
Too much glitter.
At the center Valentina wrote her own name.
VALENTINA ROSA REYES-SANTOS.
The court had approved adding Santos as a second surname.
Marco did not object.
Valentina drew Marco on one side.
Rosa on the other.
Below Marco she drew baby Mateo.
Then Isabella.
Valentina wrote:
MOM ISABELLA - RAISED ME.
Then below Rosa:
MAMA ROSA - BIRTHED ME.
"What about Grandma Carmen?"
"Prison doesn't fit on the paper."
Eventually Valentina drew Carmen off to one side.
Not erased.
Not central.
Just true.
Elena Santos went above Rosa.
Arturo Reyes appeared with a dotted line.
"Why dotted?" Marco asked.
Valentina answered, "Because he was mean and sorry."
Children had ruthless taxonomy.
At Reyes Global, the special committee finished its work.
Carmen's family holding company lost control.
Employee and independent trusts gained board seats.
Rosa's seven percent remained in the worker protection trust.
Valentina's twenty-six percent stayed independently managed until adulthood.
Marco could not vote it alone.
Neither could Rosa.
That was intentional.
No child should become a weapon between parents.
The company survived.
Smaller.
More transparent.
Less obedient to the Reyes name.
Rosa never joined management.
She opened a legal-support nonprofit for domestic workers facing coercive contracts and medical consent abuse.
The Santos Center.
She refused Marco's donation the first year.
Accepted a court-ordered restitution grant the second.
There was a difference.
Then one afternoon, Jonah delivered the final corrected fertility record.
Egg source: Rosa Elena Santos.
Sperm source: Marco Javier Reyes.
Consent status: invalid due fraud.
Maternal identity: Rosa Elena Santos.
No correction tape.
No forged signature.
No family narrative.
"That's it?"
"Legally."
"Five years of my life for one clean page."
Marco said, "It's not enough."
"No."
She placed the page in a folder.
"But it's true."
"Is that my paper?"
May you like
"Okay."
To Valentina, it was simply a fact.
