Chapter 2 - THE STORY THEY GAVE ROSA

The ballroom emptied under security orders.
Not because Marco wanted privacy.
Because Valentina did.
She was crying now.
Too many adults had made her truth feel dangerous.
"Are you mad at me?"
"No."
"Grandma said secrets protect families."
"Sometimes adults say things because they are afraid."
"Was Rosa my mommy?"
"Come in."
"Did I live in your tummy?"
"Yes."
Valentina considered that.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because people with more power than me told me I wasn't allowed."
Downstairs, Isabella demanded answers.
Carmen told the same polished story she had apparently repeated for years.
Marco and Isabella had struggled to conceive.
A fertility clinic created embryos using Marco's sperm and Isabella's eggs.
Rosa agreed to act as gestational carrier.
The pregnancy was difficult.
After birth, Rosa signed away all parental rights.
Simple.
Clean.
Legal.
Except the DNA report made that impossible.
Marco brought Rosa into the library with attorney Jonah Pierce, who had been a college friend before becoming family counsel.
"Tell us everything," Marco said.
Rosa folded her hands.
Five years earlier, she had been working in the Reyes estate kitchen.
Her mother needed heart surgery.
Carmen offered to pay for it if Rosa became a surrogate.
"I was told the embryo belonged to you and Isabella."
"Did I know?"
"No."
His mother did not blink.
She had injections.
Appointments.
A transfer procedure.
Months later, she delivered Valentina by emergency C-section.
She was allowed to hold the baby for less than two minutes.
Then Carmen's lawyer brought documents.
"I was still medicated."
"You signed while under postoperative medication?"
"Yes."
"Who witnessed it?"
"Beatriz."
Beatriz said, "She understood."
Rosa pulled a second paper from her bag.
"No."
The line marked EGG SOURCE had been covered with correction tape.
Underneath, faintly visible:
PATIENT: ROSA SANTOS.
Jonah went still.
"Someone changed the consent after she signed it."
"You told me my embryo survived."
Carmen answered, "It was the only way."
"The only way to do what?"
Carmen's eyes hardened.
"Give this family an heir before your grandfather died."
"Marco."
"What?"
"If Rosa is the biological mother, the Reyes Founder Trust has a problem."
Carmen said, "No."
"Yes."
May you like
"Valentina may control twenty-six percent of Reyes Global."
"And under the trust language, her biological mother may be her mandatory co-trustee."
