Chapter 1 - The Door Opened

The crystal glass slipped from four-year-old Lily Carter’s hand and shattered across the marble floor.

She froze.

“I’m sorry.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not annoyed.

Before Lily could step back, Vanessa grabbed her by the ankle and dragged her across the edge of the rug.

“Do you know how much that glass cost?”

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

“Stop crying.”

Vanessa snatched a bottle of red wine from the console table.

The wine poured over her hair, her yellow dress, and the floor.

“Maybe now you’ll remember not to touch things that aren’t yours.”

Maria Lopez heard the crying from the laundry room.

“Mrs. Carter!”

“Stay out of this.”

Maria saw Lily on the floor.

She crossed the room, scooped the child into her arms, and turned her back.

The blow meant for Lily landed across Maria’s shoulder.

Then the front door opened.

Daniel Carter stepped inside with his briefcase still in his hand.

He stopped beneath the chandelier.

His daughter was soaked in red wine.

Maria was kneeling on the floor, shielding her.

Vanessa stood three feet away, breathing hard.

For several seconds no one spoke.

Then Daniel dropped the briefcase.

“Lily?”

The little girl looked up.

“Daddy.”

Vanessa lifted both hands.

“This is not what it looks like.”

“Are you hurt?”

Lily shook her head too quickly.

“Sir.”

That one word made him look up.

Maria’s eyes were full of fear.

“Don’t let her explain before you see the camera.”

Daniel followed Maria’s eyes.

Above the staircase, half hidden behind decorative molding, a small black security camera pointed down into the foyer.

“That camera hasn’t worked in months.”

Maria whispered:

“It has.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“What has it been recording?”

“More than tonight.”

Vanessa turned toward the stairs.

Daniel said one word.

“Don’t.”

May you like

She stopped.

And for the first time since he walked through the door, Vanessa looked afraid.
