Chapter 2 - Twenty-Three Days

The camera archive went back twenty-three days.
Daniel watched the first clip standing up.
By the third, he sat down.
By the sixth, he could no longer look at Vanessa.
The footage showed small things.
Vanessa taking Lily’s stuffed rabbit and placing it on a high shelf while the child cried.
Vanessa canceling a video call with Lily’s grandmother, then telling Daniel later that Lily had refused to talk.
Vanessa standing over the child at dinner.
“Finish everything.”
Lily whispered:
“I’m full.”
“You’re always difficult.”
Lily reaching for a cookie.
Vanessa slapping her hand away.
“Bad girls don’t get treats.”
Daniel paused the video.
Vanessa stood near the office door.
“You’re watching this with no context.”
“What context makes that normal?”
“She needs discipline.”
“She’s four.”
“She manipulates you.”
Maria stood beside Lily on the couch.
The child had changed into pajamas but still smelled faintly of wine.
Daniel looked at the next file.
Vanessa had labeled it herself.
MELTDOWN — 4:18 P.M.
The clip showed Lily crying in the hallway.
The first thirty seconds were missing.
Maria said:
“Play the file before it.”
There was Vanessa whispering:
“If you tell Daddy what happened, Maria loses her job.”
“You threatened her with Maria?”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“It was a joke.”
“No.”
“It was never a joke.”
He looked at the camera list.
Some copied into a separate folder.
The folder title read:
LILY — BEHAVIOR.
AGGRESSIVE.
UNSTABLE.
DEFIANT.
ATTACHMENT ISSUES.
Maria whispered:
“She was making a case.”
“A case for what?”
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.”
Daniel blocked the doorway.
“No.”
“You can’t keep me here.”
“You’re right.”
“But you leave without Lily, without her things, and without touching another device in this house.”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
His family attorney, Rachel Kim.
Rachel listened for thirty seconds, then interrupted.
“Daniel, does Lily have a trust from her mother?”
He looked toward his daughter.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Four-point-eight million.”
Rachel went quiet.
Then said:
May you like
“Do not let Vanessa take anything out of that house.”
And Daniel understood this might never have been about discipline at all.
