Chapter 12 - Why Vanessa Started

Vanessa’s recorded statement lasted forty minutes.
Daniel watched only with Rachel and the detective.
She said the trust came later.
At first, she resented Lily.
Simple.
Daniel gave the child attention Vanessa wanted.
Rachel’s memory filled the house.
Every bedtime question.
Vanessa felt like she was marrying a dead woman’s family.
That resentment became punishment.
Then Eric learned about the trust.
He showed Vanessa the financial structure.
Greed gave resentment a plan.
Daniel felt no sympathy.
But the distinction mattered.
There was no mastermind from day one.
There was a woman who made one cruel choice.
Then discovered profit could reward them.
Vanessa admitted installing the bedroom camera.
Stealing Lily’s documents.
Planting the bracelet on Maria.
Forging Daniel’s signature with software.
She blamed Eric for the legal structure.
Blamed Sloan for the diagnosis.
Blamed herself for “losing control” the night of the wine.
The detective paused the video.
“She still calls it losing control.”
“She made choices.”
Then Vanessa said:
“I never planned to hurt Lily physically.”
“Finish.”
“I thought if she went away for a while, Daniel would finally see how hard she was.”
Then:
“And yes, Eric said the trust could pay.”
Vanessa offered access codes to Eric’s accounts.
The cooperation could dismantle the whole scheme.
Rachel said:
“This is useful.”
“Useful is not forgiveness.”
“No.”
“Good.”
He agreed not to oppose lawful cooperation consideration.
Then Lily’s therapist arrived for her first home session.
No connection to anyone.
Did not ask about Vanessa.
Maya asked:
“Why no door?”
Lily answered:
“So nobody gets locked in.”
Daniel heard from the hallway.
“She’s telling it.”
“In her way.”
Then Maya asked Lily:
“Who lives here?”
Lily placed three figures.
Lily.
Then she added a fourth.
Mommy.
May you like
Not Vanessa.
Rachel.
