Chapter 14 - The Plan for Daniel

The answer sat inside the DANIEL folder.
Sleep.
Alcohol.
Anger.
Vanessa had been documenting all three.
Daniel drank two glasses of bourbon most nights after Rachel died.
Vanessa saved old liquor receipts.
She recorded arguments.
But only after provoking them.
One clip began with Daniel shouting:
“Stop asking me the same question!”
The missing first minute showed Vanessa repeatedly telling him:
“You don’t even love your daughter.”
Rachel Kim watched the full version.
“Classic context stripping.”
Another file showed Daniel asleep on the couch at 2 p.m.
Label:
DAYTIME INTOXICATION.
The calendar showed the truth.
He had taken a red-eye from Seattle and been awake thirty hours.
Make Daniel look unstable.
Then Vanessa became the only organized adult left.
Daniel felt ashamed at how elegant it was.
“Manipulation looks elegant after someone connects the dots. In real time it looks like a hundred unrelated annoyances.”
Then the detective found something uglier.
Vanessa had ordered prescription sleep medication online using Daniel’s name.
But enough to create a record that Daniel had “requested” medication.
“She was preparing paper.”
That was Vanessa’s real weapon.
The kind of evidence people trust because it looks boring.
Daniel asked:
“What would have happened Monday?”
Rachel answered carefully.
“Lily goes to Pine Hollow.”
“Then?”
“Vanessa files emergency guardianship.”
“Then?”
“She presents you as unstable and overwhelmed.”
“And Evelyn?”
“Already removed by forged resignation.”
“Maria?”
“Accused of theft.”
Daniel looked at the wall.
Everyone erased one at a time.
“Lily’s asking for you.”
Daniel stood immediately.
In Lily’s room, she held the yellow dress from the night of the wine.
“I don’t want it.”
“Okay.”
“Throw it away.”
“You decide.”
Lily walked to the trash can.
“Donate.”
“Okay.”
She was learning something Vanessa had tried to take.
Then Lily looked at him.
“Can Maria take me to school tomorrow?”
Daniel’s smile faded slightly.
He wanted to say:
Instead he asked:
“Why?”
“Because I want Maria.”
He swallowed.
“Okay.”

Protection was not possession.
Another lesson.
