Chapter 6 - The Question

Daniel barely slept.
Lily’s question followed him through every room.
Why didn’t you stop her?
Because he did not know.
Because he did not look.
Because Vanessa had been polite when he was home.
Because Lily was four and cried about socks, vegetables, bedtime, and sometimes real fear looked like ordinary childhood until someone cared enough to separate them.
In the morning, he made pancakes.
“It’s weird.”
“I know.”
“Progress.”
Then hid the rest under a napkin.
He did not call attention to it.
Later Maria explained:
“She hides food now.”
“Why?”
“Because she never knew when Vanessa would take it away.”
Daniel opened the refrigerator.
For the first time he noticed the latch marks near the handles.
A padlock had been there.
Removed before he came home.
“She locked it some afternoons.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The staircase camera had captured those too.
Vanessa walking into frame with a silver padlock.
Lily asking for yogurt.
Vanessa saying:
“Dinner is for children who behave.”
Daniel turned off the screen.
Rachel arrived with more news.
Dr. Sloan had received payments from Eric Sterling’s consulting company.
Then another record surfaced.
Vanessa had scheduled a family court consultation four months earlier.
Before any of the so-called behavior problems were documented.
Rachel placed the date in front of Daniel.
“She planned the legal path first.”
Then built the evidence.
Daniel remembered Vanessa encouraging him to take a longer Chicago trip.
“Lily and I need girl time.”
Maria placed a hand on the table.
“Don’t disappear into guilt.”
“She asked why I didn’t stop it.”
“And you’ll answer with what you do next.”
“Why did Vanessa send me papers resigning me from Lily’s trust?”
“What?”
“I never signed them.”
Rachel reached for the phone.
“Send everything.”
Minutes later the documents arrived.
Evelyn’s signature was forged too.
If filed, the papers would remove the one person standing between Vanessa and control after Daniel.
Then Rachel noticed the notary stamp.
“Caroline Hayes.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who is that?”
May you like
Rachel looked at Vanessa’s engagement photos on the wall.
“Her maid of honor.”
