Chapter 8 - Lily’s Room

Daniel climbed the stairs faster than anyone.
The smoke detector looked normal.
Maria brought a chair.
He twisted the cover.
Inside was a tiny camera.
His hands started shaking.
“Don’t touch the card.”
The files were worse because they were quiet.
Whispering for her father.
“What’s wrong?”
“I miss Daddy.”
“Why?”
“I want him.”
“Does Daddy leave you a lot?”
“Say it.”
“He leaves.”
“Does that make you sad?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa turned toward the hidden camera.
Lily crying after a nightmare.
Vanessa:
“Are you scared Daddy won’t come back?”
Lily:
“No.”
Vanessa:
“You were crying.”
“I dreamed Mommy.”
“She kept only the answer she needed.”
The archive contained edited versions too.
Lily saying:
“He leaves.”
“I’m scared.”
“I want Daddy.”
Spliced into a narrative.
Daniel watched one minute.
“No more.”
They did not need to torture themselves to prove it.
Then Maria noticed the dates.
The bedroom camera started recording six weeks before the staircase camera.
Vanessa had been building the file for almost two months.
Daniel’s face went cold.
“What happened six weeks ago?”
“That was when you updated your will.”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
He had added Vanessa as a temporary household guardian if he died before marriage.
Just emergency caretaker for seventy-two hours until Evelyn arrived.
Vanessa must have seen the document.
Maybe misunderstood it.
Rachel checked the draft.
During those seventy-two hours, the caretaker could authorize emergency medical treatment.
Enough to place Lily into evaluation.
Enough to create momentum.
Daniel whispered:
“She was going to use my death?”
“We don’t have evidence she planned anything against you.”
“But she was preparing for any situation where she could step in.”
They had located Vanessa’s second phone through Caroline.
The phone was at a hotel.
Vanessa had checked out.
But the device remained in the room safe.
Rachel’s answer came quickly.
“Because she wanted us to find something.”
They opened the phone under warrant.
DANIEL.
Inside was a video of Daniel shouting in his office.
Throwing a file across the room.
The date was the day Rachel died.
Vanessa had saved it.

And labeled it:
VIOLENT TEMPER.
