Chapter 15 - Maria’s Name

Maria had worked in the house for eleven months.

Until the investigation, Daniel knew almost nothing about her.

That embarrassed him.

He knew she had two sons.

Did not know one was in nursing school.

Knew she took Sundays off.

Did not know she spent them caring for her sister.

Knew Vanessa disliked her.

Now Maria sat across from him with an employment contract Rachel had drafted.

Direct access to Daniel.

Whistleblower protection.

Maria read the last line twice.

“You put this because of me?”

“Because I should have had it already.”

“Good answer.”

Then she added:

“I’m not staying forever.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“I want my own cleaning company.”

“Good.”

“No investment.”

“I didn’t offer.”

“You were going to.”

The case moved forward.

Vanessa entered a plea on several charges.

Eric and Sloan fought theirs.

Daniel agreed Lily would not participate in any public proceeding unless absolutely required.

The staircase footage spoke.

The forged files spoke.

Maria’s testimony spoke.

Then a reporter called Daniel.

“Would you like to comment on allegations that Vanessa was acting out of concern for Lily?”

Later he regretted not answering.

Not because he wanted publicity.

Because “concern” had become a shield.

Rachel helped him issue one statement.

Concern does not require humiliating a child, manufacturing evidence, or profiting from her removal.

Weeks later, Lily saw Maria’s name online under a headline.

HOUSEMAID SAVES HEIRESS.

“I hate that.”

Lily asked:

“What’s heiress?”

Daniel said:

“A word reporters use when they don’t know what else to say.”

Lily pointed at the picture.

“You saved me.”

“I helped.”

“You got in front.”

“Yes.”

“Were you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Then why?”

“Because scared and stop are different things.”

Lily repeated it slowly.

“Scared and stop are different.”

Daniel looked at Maria.

That sentence belonged in the house.

Then the doorbell rang.

A courier delivered a package from Vanessa’s attorney.

Inside was the engagement ring.

Daniel had forgotten Vanessa still had it.

And beneath the ring was a handwritten letter addressed to Lily.

Daniel did not open it.

He placed it on the table.

Maria asked:

“What will you do?”

May you like

Daniel looked toward his daughter.

“Ask her.”
