Chapter 16 - The Letter

Lily stared at the envelope.

“From Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to read it?”

“No.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

“Can Maria?”

“Only if you want.”

“No.”

Daniel put it in a locked document box.

Available if Lily ever wanted it.

The engagement ring went into a separate envelope for legal disposition.

No throwing it into the ocean.

Daniel was tired of making symbols do work people should do themselves.

Dr. Maya Chen continued therapy.

One day Lily drew a red puddle.

Daniel tensed when Maya showed him.

Then Daddy at the door.

Maya said:

“She’s changing the ending.”

Daniel whispered:

“Can I see?”

“Ask her.”

That rule changed the house.

Can I show the drawing?

Daniel also changed his work.

He sold one development project.

He refused to perform sacrifice for applause.

He simply made his schedule match being a father.

Then Evelyn returned from Denver.

She hugged Lily only after asking.

Rachel Kim brought final trust amendments.

No guardian could directly approve payments to any institution owned by family or household members.

Two independent signoffs required for residential treatment.

External child advocate required for major placement decisions.

Lily colored beside them.

“What are papers?”

“Papers that make adults ask more questions.”

“Good.”

Then Rachel handed Daniel one more document.

A financial recovery report.

Pine Hollow had refunded the $12,500 deposit.

Eric’s company had transferred back consulting fees connected to Lily’s file.

Vanessa agreed to restitution.

Money could be restored.

That evening Lily dropped another glass.

Then said:

“Shoes on. Don’t move.”

They cleaned it.

Nothing else happened.

Lily stared at the empty floor.

May you like

Then smiled.

And Daniel realized ordinary was becoming believable again.
