Chapter 11 - Listen to the Child

Rachel’s video was eleven minutes long.

Daniel cried through nine of them.

She spoke about Lily.

Not money.

Lily hated peas.

Needed time before hugs when upset.

Fell asleep faster if someone rubbed her back twice, then stopped.

Daniel laughed through tears.

He had forgotten that detail.

Then Rachel became serious.

“I know you, Daniel.”

He whispered:

“I know.”

“You solve problems by moving fast.”

“If Lily ever says something happened, don’t decide whether it makes sense before you decide whether to listen.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

He thought of every time Vanessa said:

And he accepted the summary.

Rachel’s final instruction was about the trust.

“Do not let it become a reason adults fight over her.”

Then:

“If somebody tells you she needs to be sent away, get a second opinion from someone who has nothing to gain.”

Daniel shut the laptop.

Maria gave him a minute.

Then Lily asked from the doorway:

“Was that Mommy?”

No one had heard her come in.

“Yes.”

“Can I see?”

Rachel Kim said:

“It’s her mother.”

He did not show Lily the whole guardianship section.

He showed her the first three minutes.

Rachel laughing about peas.

“Mommy knows.”

“She did.”

Then Rachel on screen said:

“Lily, if you ever see this when you’re little, I love you bigger than all the houses Daddy will ever build.”

The child climbed into his lap.

Vanessa had turned herself in with counsel.

She denied child abuse.

Denied intending permanent placement.

Admitted “documenting concerns.”

Then her lawyer made an offer.

Vanessa would cooperate against Eric and Sloan.

In exchange, she wanted Daniel to support a reduced sentence recommendation.

Daniel stared at Rachel Kim.

“No.”

“Listen first.”

“I heard enough.”

“Lily may not have to testify if the case resolves.”

Then Rachel added:

“There’s one more condition.”

Vanessa wanted to give a statement directly to Daniel.

“No.”

But the statement already existed.

Recorded.

And in it Vanessa said one thing none of them expected.

“I didn’t start this because of the trust.”
