Chapter 10 - Rachel’s Storage Unit

The storage facility sat in Queens.
Daniel had not visited in two years.
He remembered packing Rachel’s things after she died.
He remembered signing forms to donate most of them.
He did not remember Vanessa helping.
The manager pulled records.
Vanessa had reopened the unit under Daniel’s account using an old authorization.
Police opened it with a warrant.
Inside were Rachel’s belongings.
Boxes Daniel believed gone.
Daniel stood in the doorway and could not move.
Maria whispered:
“She kept all of this?”
“Why?”
Then Rachel Kim found a plastic file bin.
TRUST.
Inside were duplicate statements.
Rachel Carter’s handwritten notes.
One page had been circled.
If Daniel is incapacitated or removed, Evelyn assumes control.
If Evelyn cannot serve, the court appoints a fiduciary in Lily’s best interest.
Vanessa had underlined:
Another note in Vanessa’s handwriting:
Guardian recommendation matters.
Then they found letters.
Rachel had written one to Daniel before her death.
If anyone ever wants control of Lily more than they want Lily herself, pay attention.
He sat on the concrete floor.
Money makes people call greed responsibility.
Don’t let anyone turn our daughter into a reason to access what belongs to her.
Daniel closed his eyes.
His wife had warned him from the grave.
He had missed it because Vanessa had hidden the letter.
Then Maria found a small flash drive taped under the lid.
Label:
FOR DANIEL — IF THERE IS EVER A GUARDIANSHIP FIGHT.
Daniel looked at Rachel Kim.
She plugged it into a clean laptop.
Rachel Carter appeared on screen.
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Hi,” she said.
“If you’re watching this, then something happened that I hoped never would.”

Lily’s mother looked directly into the camera.
“And before you do anything else, listen to the child.”
