Chapter 18 - The Red Dress

A year later, Lily chose a red dress for her fifth birthday.

Daniel nearly said:

How about blue?

He stopped himself.

“Red?”

“Yes.”

“Good choice.”

Dr. Maya did not attend because therapists were not family friends.

Lily drank grape juice from a plastic cup.

No crystal anywhere near children.

Daniel had learned some lessons did not need symbolism.

Maria arrived late carrying a huge wrapped box.

Inside was a toy cleaning cart.

Lily screamed with happiness.

Daniel looked offended.

“You bought her a mop?”

“She asked.”

Lily pushed it across the living room.

“I’m Maria!”

“Excellent career choice.”

Later Lily spilled grape juice on the red dress.

She froze for half a second.

“Oops.”

Not apology repeated ten times.

Daniel handed her a towel.

“Want to change?”

“No.”

Daniel stared at it all afternoon.

Then Evelyn asked him quietly:

“You ever think about dating?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“Maybe.”

“When?”

“When Lily isn’t the reason.”

He had learned from Rachel’s video too.

Do not turn the child into the reason you stop living.

That evening, after everyone left, Daniel opened the document box.

Vanessa’s letter remained sealed.

He considered destroying it.

Then he opened Rachel’s letter instead.

He had read it twenty times.

One line still caught him.

Pay attention to who wants control more than connection.

Daniel looked toward Lily sleeping on the couch in her stained red dress.

Vanessa had wanted obedience.

Maria wanted Lily safe.

Rachel wanted Lily heard.

Daniel had once wanted everything under control.

Now he wanted something harder.

A daughter who felt free enough to disagree with him.

The next morning she proved it.

“Daddy, your pancakes are terrible.”

May you like

He smiled.

“Perfect.”
