Chapter 2 - The Black LensPolice arrived before Vanessa could leave.

Officer Ben Harris separated the adults while another officer sat with Lily and Noah in the living room.
Margaret stayed beside them.
Daniel stood in the kitchen, staring at the floor like it might tell him what to say.
Vanessa kept repeating one sentence.
“This is insane.”
Harris finally asked, “Where is the camera?”
Lily pointed upstairs.
In her bedroom, behind a row of picture books, police found a tiny black lens built into a wireless device.
Daniel stared at it.
“I didn’t put that there.”
Vanessa said nothing.
A second camera appeared above a kitchen cabinet.
A third was hidden inside a hallway smoke detector.
All three were aimed at family spaces.
None were part of Daniel’s home-security system.
Harris looked at him.
“Who has access to this house?”
“My mother. Vanessa. Me. The housekeeper comes Tuesdays.”
Vanessa snapped, “You’re looking at me because Margaret is making this dramatic.”
Harris asked, “Did you install the cameras?”
“No.”
“Do you know who did?”
“No.”
Lily tugged Margaret’s sleeve.
“There’s one by Daddy’s office too.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Lily nodded.
“Vanessa said never touch it.”
Every head in the hallway shifted toward Vanessa.
She crossed her arms.
“She makes things up.”
Lily flinched.
Daniel saw it.
Really saw it.
For the first time, he noticed that his daughter did not argue with Vanessa.
She shrank.
Police found the fourth camera inside a decorative vent across from Daniel’s home office.
Harris removed the memory card.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You can’t just take private property.”
Harris looked at her.
“So it is yours?”
Vanessa froze.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Too late.
Harris bagged the camera.
Then another officer came downstairs carrying a laptop.
“We found a receiver in the guest-room closet.”
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“You knew.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
The officer opened the laptop.
A grid of live camera feeds filled the screen.
Lily’s room.
The kitchen.
The hallway.
Daniel’s office.
And one camera Daniel had not seen.
May you like
It pointed directly at the sofa.
Exactly where he had been sitting while Lily cried.
