Chapter 11 - The BackpackPolice examined Lily’s backpack.

Inside a decorative keychain was a tiny audio tracker.

Vanessa had been listening.

Not continuously.

But enough.

The device sent short recordings when activated remotely.

Lily’s conversations.

Her teacher.

Other children.

Even Margaret.

Daniel stared at the evidence photo.

“She put a microphone on a four-year-old.”

The tracker logs showed remote activations from Vanessa’s phone.

One activation occurred the day Lily told Ms. Harper:

“I don’t like going home when Daddy works late.”

That evening, Vanessa punished Lily for “making family business public.”

The camera captured it.

Vanessa took away Lily’s favorite stuffed rabbit.

Made her sit alone in the hallway.

Told her:

“People who talk about private things lose privileges.”

Daniel watched the full clip this time.

He cried.

Quietly.

Then Rachel called.

North Ridge’s financial records showed something even bigger.

Cole had been billing Sarah’s trust for “remote behavioral monitoring.”

The hidden cameras.

The backpack tracker.

All purchased with Lily’s money.

Daniel laughed once in disbelief.

“She paid for her own surveillance.”

Rachel’s voice was flat.

“Yes.”

The paper trail was devastating.

Then investigators found a second client file.

Another child.

Another wealthy family.

Similar charges.

Similar monitoring.

Cole’s scheme may have been broader than the Carter family.

Vanessa claimed she knew nothing about other families.

That could be true.

Daniel no longer assumed.

At the next supervised visit, Lily brought her stuffed rabbit.

Margaret had returned it after police cleared it.

Daniel asked:

“Can I sit here?”

Lily nodded.

He sat on the floor.

She played with blocks.

Noah knocked them over.

Lily gasped.

Daniel waited.

Lily looked at him.

“Is he in trouble?”

“No.”

“He broke it.”

“He’s one.”

She stared.

Then slowly began rebuilding.

After several minutes, she pushed one block toward Daniel.

Not forgiveness.

An invitation.

He took it.

Then the caseworker received a call.

Her expression changed.

She stepped outside.

When she returned, she told Daniel:

“Vanessa has made an allegation against Margaret.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

May you like

“What allegation?”

“She says your mother knew about the cameras before the police arrived.”
