Chapter 16 - Sarah’s LetterSarah had written only one page.

She did not predict Vanessa.
She did not predict cameras.
She knew her husband.
Daniel avoids conflict when he is afraid.
That was the line that cut deepest.
Sarah wrote:
You think staying calm means you are different from your father. Most of the time, you are. But please remember that peace is not the same thing as silence. If Lily tells you something hurts, do not make her prove it ten times because you are afraid of making someone angry.
Daniel stopped reading.
Rachel waited.
He continued.
Believe her first. Investigate second. Protect her while you figure it out.
Daniel folded the letter.
For years, he had treated Sarah’s death like the worst thing that could happen to Lily.
It was not.
The worst thing was losing Sarah and then losing trust in the parent who remained.
At his next supervised visit, Daniel brought nothing.
No gifts.
No stuffed animals.
No candy.
He sat on the floor.
Lily built a tower.
He watched.
After ten minutes she asked:
“Did Grandma tell you I got a star at school?”
“No.”
Lily smiled slightly.
“I got a star.”
“For what?”
“Helping clean paint.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
Cleaning.
Lily saw it.
“It was fun.”
He forced himself not to turn every ordinary act into danger.
“That sounds fun.”
She nodded.
Then asked:
“Do you still love Vanessa?”
Daniel thought carefully.
“I care about what happens to her because she is Noah’s mom.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Four years old.
Still direct.
Daniel swallowed.
“No. Not the way a husband should love a wife.”
Lily went back to her blocks.
Then:
“Do you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Even when I’m loud?”
His eyes filled.
“Especially then.”
Lily looked at him for a long time.
Then pushed a block into his hand.
He added it to the tower.
After the visit, Erin Shaw gave Daniel an update.
His safety plan was progressing.
Overnight visits might eventually be considered.
Daniel did not celebrate yet.
Then Harris called.
Vanessa had accepted a plea negotiation.
But before signing, she made one final claim.
Cole had hidden money in Lily’s name.
May you like
Money nobody had found.
If true, Lily could appear connected to the fraud.
