Chapter 15 - The Missing VideoThe missing video was not on Vanessa’s laptop.

It was in an encrypted cloud folder.
Cole gave police the password.
The file was labeled:
DANIEL_TEST.
Daniel hated the name before it played.
The recording showed Vanessa standing in the kitchen with Lily.
Noah was asleep upstairs.
Vanessa placed a glass of juice on the counter.
Then she deliberately knocked it over.
Lily jumped.
Vanessa said:
“Daddy is coming home soon.”
Lily stared at the spill.
“What do I do?”
“Nothing.”
“I should clean it.”
“No.”
Vanessa crouched to Lily’s height.
“When Daddy comes in, I’m going to tell him you threw it.”
Lily’s face changed.
“No.”
“Then tell him I’m lying.”
“I will.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Good.”
The front door opened.
Daniel entered.
Vanessa immediately said:
“Lily threw her juice because I told her no cookies.”
Lily screamed:
“No! Vanessa did it!”
Daniel looked exhausted.
He rubbed his forehead.
“Lily, stop yelling.”
“She did it!”
“Go to your room.”
Lily stared at him.
“Daddy, look.”
“I said go.”
The child walked away crying.
Vanessa looked directly at the hidden camera.
And smiled.
Daniel paused the video himself.
His face had gone gray.
“That’s why it was called a test.”
Harris nodded.
“She was testing whether you would believe Lily over her.”
“I failed.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
Daniel stood there for several seconds.
Then said:
“I want Lily to see this someday.”
Harris frowned.
“Why?”
“Not now. When she’s older. If she thinks she imagined it. I want her to know she told the truth.”
That answer surprised Harris.
For once, Daniel was not asking for evidence to defend himself.
He wanted evidence to defend Lily’s memory.
The video also destroyed Vanessa’s claim that Lily was a chronic liar.
Prosecutors added it to the case.
Then Rachel found something in Sarah’s original trust paperwork.
A handwritten letter from Sarah.
It had never been digitized.
Addressed to Daniel.
Written shortly before Sarah’s final surgery.
Daniel opened it.

The first sentence made him cry.
If I’m gone, please believe Lily the first time she tells you she is scared.
