Chapter 8 - The File CabinetThe answer was inside Daniel’s office.

Not digital.
Paper.
A locked file cabinet held old insurance forms, medical records, and therapy invoices from years earlier.
Daniel kept the key in his desk.
Cole knew that.
He had worked from Daniel’s home during tax season.
The cabinet showed no signs of forced entry.
Because none were needed.
Camera footage showed Cole opening it while Vanessa stood watch.
He photographed Daniel’s therapy summaries.
Then they built their strategy around his deepest fear.
His father.
His temper.
His shame.
They knew Daniel would avoid conflict because conflict made him feel like Richard.
So whenever Lily cried, Vanessa framed intervention as overreaction.
“Don’t become your father.”
She said it in three separate recordings.
Daniel backed down every time.
Margaret watched one clip with Harris.
Her face hardened.
“I told him for years that silence isn’t kindness.”
Harris asked, “Did you know any of this was happening?”
“No.”
“Did you suspect Vanessa?”
“I knew Lily changed.”
“When?”
“About four months ago.”
“Why didn’t you report it?”
Margaret went quiet.
Because adults always had reasons after children ran out of time.
“I confronted Daniel.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Margaret looked down.
“I thought he would handle it.”
Harris nodded once.
Another adult had passed responsibility to someone else.
Margaret understood.
That evening she told Lily:
“I should’ve come sooner.”
Lily was coloring.
“You came today.”
Margaret nearly cried.
Then Lily drew three people.
Herself.
Noah.
Margaret.
Daniel was not on the page.
Margaret did not ask why.
The investigation widened.
North Ridge Family Services had billed other families for questionable services.
Cole’s company was under financial review.
Then Rachel called Daniel.
“We found something involving Noah.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
Vanessa had opened a custodial investment account in Noah’s name.
The source of the first deposit was not normal.
$75,000 transferred from Lily’s trust.
Daniel stared.
“She took Lily’s money and put it in Noah’s account?”
Rachel nodded.
“And labeled it sibling therapeutic support.”
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
It was not only theft.
It was designed to make Noah financially benefit from Lily being labeled a problem.
Then Rachel found the authorization.
Daniel’s electronic signature.
Again.
But this time the login records showed something different.
The approval came from Daniel’s phone.
