Chapter 14 - After Lily Was GoneThe office camera belonged to Cole.

He installed it because he did not trust Vanessa.

Criminals, Daniel learned, sometimes documented each other.

The recording was made three months earlier.

Vanessa sat across from Cole.

She said:

“Once Lily is in Arizona, Daniel will fall apart for a while.”

Cole replied:

“He might bring her back.”

“He won’t if the therapists say she needs stability.”

“You mean the therapists you’re paying.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Exactly.”

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

Harris kept playing.

Cole asked:

“And Noah?”

“Noah stays with me.”

“And Daniel?”

Vanessa leaned back.

“He keeps the company. I don’t want the company.”

“What do you want?”

“The house. Noah’s accounts. Control of Lily’s treatment budget.”

Cole laughed.

“That’s still millions.”

Vanessa’s answer was colder.

“It’s security.”

Then she added:

“Daniel can visit.”

Harris stopped the video.

Daniel whispered:

“She was going to take both kids from me.”

“Different ways,” Harris said.

Lily physically removed.

Noah legally controlled.

Daniel emotionally broken enough to accept it.

The plan required him to be passive.

He had trained himself for the role.

That realization hurt.

Then the recording continued.

Cole asked Vanessa:

“What if Margaret fights?”

Vanessa smiled.

“She’s old. Everyone thinks she’s dramatic.”

Margaret watched that part later.

“Old?”

Harris almost smiled.

She did not.

At the next family-court hearing, the judge extended protections.

Lily remained with Margaret.

Noah remained there too under a temporary kinship placement because Vanessa’s contact was restricted and Daniel had not yet completed his safety plan.

Daniel accepted it.

He hated going home to an empty house.

Good.

The emptiness made avoidance impossible.

He enrolled in parenting classes.

Individual therapy.

A program for non-offending caregivers who failed to protect.

The phrase burned.

Failed to protect.

He wrote it down.

At therapy, the counselor asked:

“What did you fear would happen if you challenged Vanessa?”

Daniel answered:

“She’d say I was like my father.”

“And what happened because you didn’t challenge her?”

He looked at the floor.

“I became the adult who didn’t protect my child.”

Then his lawyer called.

Vanessa wanted to speak directly to him.

Rachel advised against it.

Daniel agreed.

Minutes later, Vanessa sent a message through her attorney instead.

Tell Daniel there is one video the police still haven’t found.

And if he wants Lily to forgive him, he needs to see it.
