Chapter 12 - Margaret’s SecretMargaret did know something.
Not about Vanessa’s cameras.
About a different one.
Months earlier, she had become worried after Lily started begging not to go home.
Margaret bought a small nanny camera.
She never installed it.
She asked Daniel for permission.
He said no.
“Vanessa will think we don’t trust her.”
Margaret put the unopened camera in a drawer.
Vanessa knew about that conversation because Daniel told her.
Now she was twisting it.
Claiming Margaret had illegally monitored the house.
Police found the unopened device exactly where Margaret said it was.
Receipt.
Packaging.
No recordings.
The allegation collapsed.
But Daniel could not ignore the memory.
His mother had raised concern.
He had defended Vanessa.
Again.
Margaret did not let him apologize easily.
“You keep saying sorry like it’s a mop.”
Daniel looked confused.
“A mop?”
“You spill something, wipe it up, expect the floor to look the same.”
He stared at her.
“It doesn’t work like that with a child.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“No. You’re learning.”
That was fair.
Then Harris brought news.
Cole had agreed to cooperate.
Not out of conscience.
To reduce his exposure.
He admitted creating North Ridge as a fraud vehicle.
He admitted helping Vanessa alter reports and redirect trust money.
But he claimed Vanessa designed the family manipulation.
Daniel asked:
“Why would she do this to Lily?”
Cole’s answer was simple.
“Because Lily owned money Vanessa couldn’t control.”
“And Noah?”
“Vanessa wanted both children’s money under one structure she controlled.”
Daniel felt sick.
Cole continued.
“She thought you’d eventually adopt the narrative that Lily needed treatment. Once she was placed outside the home, Vanessa planned to become co-trustee.”
“What about me?”
Cole looked down.
“You were supposed to keep working.”
Daniel almost laughed.
That had been his role.
Provider.
Signature.
Witness who did not witness.
Then Cole revealed something nobody expected.
“Vanessa didn’t choose your family randomly.”
Daniel froze.
“What does that mean?”
Cole looked at Harris.

Then back at Daniel.
“She knew about Sarah’s trust before your first date.”
