Chapter 9 - His Own PhoneDaniel remembered that night.

He had fallen asleep on the couch after a fourteen-hour workday.
Vanessa brought him tea.
Took his phone from his hand.
Told him she would plug it in upstairs.
The camera showed the rest.
Vanessa unlocked the phone using the code she had watched Daniel enter for months.
She opened his email.
Approved the transfer.
Deleted the confirmation.
Then placed the phone beside his bed.
Daniel watched the footage without speaking.
Rachel said:
“She used your access.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She used my laziness.”
“Daniel—”
“No. I signed things without reading them. I gave Cole too much access. I kept choosing easy explanations.”
Rachel let that sit.
Accountability was not the same as taking blame for another person’s crime.
But Daniel was finally learning the line.
Cole was arrested first.
Financial fraud.
Identity misuse.
Evidence tampering.
More charges pending.
Vanessa remained under investigation for child mistreatment and fraud.
She was barred from contact with Lily and had supervised contact restrictions concerning Noah.
That last part shattered her.
“My son needs me!”
In court, the judge answered:
“Your son needs safety.”
Margaret sat behind Daniel.
He did not feel victorious.
Noah loved Vanessa.
That truth complicated everything.
A child could love someone who had made dangerous choices.
At Daniel’s first supervised visit, Lily refused to hug him.
He knelt several feet away.
“That’s okay.”
She looked surprised.
He had never said that before.
No forced affection.
No “be nice.”
No guilt.
No performance.
Noah crawled toward Daniel immediately.
Daniel picked him up.
Lily watched.
Her face changed.
Daniel saw jealousy and fear cross it.
He put Noah down gently.
“You don’t have to compete with him.”
Lily looked at the floor.
“Vanessa says you picked him.”
Daniel’s throat closed.
“I did make you feel that way.”
She looked up.
He did not say, “But I didn’t mean to.”
He said:
“I was wrong.”
Lily stared for a long time.
Then she whispered:
“Did you see me?”
Daniel almost broke.
“Not enough.”
Outside, Harris was waiting.
“We found why the cameras were really installed.”
Daniel frowned.
“I thought it was to build a case against Lily.”
“That was part of it.”
“What was the other part?”
May you like
Harris handed him a transcript.
Cole had planned to use the footage against Daniel too.
