Chapter 7 - Daddy Doesn’t LookDaniel sat alone in his dark house with the note in front of him.

DADDY DOESN’T LOOK.
Four-year-old handwriting.
Uneven letters.
No accusation could have been clearer.
Rachel arrived with coffee.
Daniel had not moved.
“I thought being a good father meant providing everything.”
Rachel sat across from him.
“And now?”
“It meant noticing.”
She did not comfort him.
He was grateful.
The next morning, child services interviewed Daniel.
The caseworker, Erin Shaw, asked simple questions.
“Did you ever see Vanessa make Lily perform chores while supervising Noah?”
“Yes.”
“Did you think that was appropriate?”
“At first, I thought she was helping.”
“Four years old?”
Daniel looked down.
“No.”
“Did Lily ask you for help?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
The truthful answer hurt.
“Sometimes I told her to listen to Vanessa.”
Erin wrote it down.
“I should have protected her.”
Erin looked up.
“Yes.”
Then she added:
“What you do next matters too.”
Daniel was given supervised visitation only.
He accepted it.
Vanessa, meanwhile, denied everything.
Her attorney called the footage “selective domestic recordings.”
Then forensic analysts found the original camera-control app.
Vanessa’s account.
Vanessa’s password recovery email.
Vanessa’s notes.
And a cloud backup Cole apparently forgot existed.
The backup held deleted footage.
One clip showed Vanessa sitting at the kitchen island with Cole.
Vanessa said:
“Daniel’s guilt is useful. He’ll do anything to prove he isn’t like his father.”
Cole laughed.
“He already is.”
Daniel heard that and froze.
His father, Richard Carter, had been violent and controlling when Daniel was young.
Daniel spent his whole adult life promising he would never become him.
He had mistaken not yelling for being safe.
He had mistaken calm for protection.
Then the deleted footage revealed why Vanessa knew that history.
Cole had given her Daniel’s private therapy records.
Records Cole should never have had.
Rachel looked up.
“This is no longer just financial fraud.”

Daniel stared at the screen.
“How did Cole get my therapy file?”
