Chapter 13 - Before the First DateDaniel met Vanessa at a charity fundraiser eighteen months after Sarah died.

At least, that was the story he believed.
Cole told a different one.
Vanessa had worked briefly for a financial-services contractor that handled estate administration.
She saw public filings connected to Sarah’s family trust.
She learned Daniel was widowed.
One child.
Significant assets.
A vulnerable transition.
Then Cole introduced them.
Daniel stared at him.
“You set us up?”
Cole looked ashamed.
“I thought it was harmless at first.”
“Harmless?”
“She wanted access. I wanted business.”
Rachel found the emails.
Months before Daniel met Vanessa:
V: Is the widower the trustee?
C: Yes.
V: And the daughter is sole beneficiary?
C: Mostly. Why?
V: Just curious.
She was not curious.
Later:
V: Does he date?
Cole had answered:
Not yet.
Then:
V: He will.
Daniel closed the laptop.
He felt humiliated.
But Rachel stopped him.
“Do not confuse being targeted with being innocent.”
He looked at her.
She continued.
“She targeted you. You still made choices after that.”
He nodded.
That distinction mattered.
Vanessa manipulated.
Daniel neglected.
Both truths could exist.
The prosecution strengthened its case.
Vanessa’s attorney requested a plea discussion.
Margaret did not care about the sentence.
She cared about Lily.
“Do not turn her life into a courtroom story,” she told Daniel.
So he stopped talking to reporters.
Declined interviews.
Asked the court to protect Lily’s identity where possible.
At school, Ms. Harper welcomed Lily back gradually.
Only mornings.
Margaret waited outside.
The first day, Lily cried at the door.
“I don’t want you to leave.”
Margaret knelt.
“I’ll be right outside.”
“How do I know?”
Margaret pointed through the window.
“My ugly blue car.”
Lily smiled.
“Very ugly.”
“Exactly.”
Lily went inside.
Two hours later she came out holding a painting.
Four people.
Lily.
Noah.
Margaret.
And a fourth figure at the edge.
Daniel.
Smaller than the others.
But present.
That night Harris called Daniel.
“We found another camera.”
Daniel’s heart dropped.
“Where?”
“Not your house.”
Harris paused.
May you like
“Cole’s office.”
It had recorded Vanessa admitting what she planned to do after Lily was sent away.
