Chapter 6 - The StaircaseThe video showed no dramatic fall.

That was the point.
Vanessa did not need one.
She scattered toys on the landing.
Then called Lily upstairs.
When Lily stepped around them, Vanessa raised her voice.
“Stop running!”
Lily was walking.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
Lily twisted away and dropped to the carpet.
Seconds later, Daniel entered through the front door.
He heard crying.
He saw Lily on the floor.
He saw toys everywhere.
Vanessa said:
“She was running with Noah nearby.”
Daniel’s recorded voice answered:
“Lily, we’ve talked about this.”
He never asked what happened.
Harris stopped the video.
Daniel stared at the frozen image.
His daughter was looking at him.
Not Vanessa.
Him.
Waiting.
He had missed it.
Again.
The schedule contained eleven staged incidents.
Nothing required serious injury.
Each one was meant to create a pattern.
A dangerous child.
An exhausted stepmother.
A concerned father.
Daniel whispered:
“Why?”
Harris answered:
“Money may be part of it.”
Rachel found another part.
Cole had prepared a family-court consultation.
Not filed.
Drafted.
Vanessa would seek temporary custody of Noah during a separation.
She would argue Daniel failed to protect the baby from Lily’s behavior.
She would also argue Lily needed residential treatment paid from Sarah’s trust.
Daniel stared.
“Residential treatment?”
Rachel nodded.
North Ridge Family Services had a contract with a private facility in Arizona.
Every month Lily stayed there would generate fees.
Fees paid by her trust.
Cole’s company would receive referral payments.
Daniel’s face went white.
“They were going to send my four-year-old away.”
“They were preparing the option.”
The distinction mattered legally.
Emotionally, it did not.
Then Rachel found an email from Vanessa to Cole.
Daniel is almost there. He already corrects Lily before he asks what happened.
Cole replied:
Good. Once he believes his own version, we don’t have to sell it anymore.
Daniel read the sentence three times.
That night he called Margaret.
“Can I talk to Lily?”
Margaret hesitated.
“She doesn’t want to.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
“Okay.”
He did not argue.
Then Margaret said:
“She gave me something.”
“What?”
“A note.”
Lily had hidden it inside a coloring book.
