Chapter 19 - The Night Lily StayedThree months later, Lily asked to stay overnight.

She asked.

Nobody suggested it.

That mattered.

Noah came too.

Margaret packed enough clothes for a week.

Daniel teased her.

She did not laugh.

“If either child calls, I’m coming.”

“I know.”

Lily heard.

“Grandma will come?”

Daniel nodded.

“Any time.”

That seemed to settle something inside her.

Dinner was spaghetti.

Noah threw noodles on the floor.

Lily froze.

Daniel noticed.

He looked at Noah.

Then at the noodles.

“Well.”

Lily waited.

Daniel handed Noah another spoon.

“He’s messy.”

Lily’s shoulders relaxed.

After dinner, Daniel cleaned the floor.

Lily watched.

“You’re not mad?”

“At noodles?”

She shrugged.

Daniel understood.

Vanessa had trained her nervous system to expect consequences where childhood should have been.

“No.”

At bedtime, Lily stood in the hallway.

“Door open?”

“Open.”

“Light on?”

“On.”

“Can I have water?”

“Yes.”

She stared at him.

Then smiled.

“You say yes a lot now.”

“Not to everything.”

“Can I have a pony?”

“No.”

She laughed.

A real laugh.

Later, Daniel checked the hallway.

Lily was asleep.

Noah snored softly in a travel crib.

Daniel sat on the floor outside their rooms.

Not because they needed guarding.

Because he was overwhelmed.

He thought about the original hidden camera.

The black lens behind the books.

For months, it had watched his family more carefully than he had.

He hated that thought.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from Margaret.

How are they?

Daniel typed:

Sleeping.

Then added:

I’m watching.

He stared at the words.

Deleted them.

Typed again:

I’m here.

Better.

The next morning, Lily woke first.

She came downstairs and found Daniel making pancakes.

One was burned.

She pointed.

“That one’s yours.”

“Why?”

“You made it.”

Fair.

They ate.

Then Lily asked:

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Are the cameras gone?”

“Yes.”

“All of them?”

“All of them.”

She looked around the kitchen.

“Good.”

Then she said something that made him stop.

“I don’t need cameras if people listen.”

Daniel sat down.

“No.”

May you like

He swallowed.

“You don’t.”
