Chapter 1 - THE SUIT ON THE FLOOR

The first thing I saw was the sleeve.
Three months of hand stitching.
Navy wool.
Mother-of-pearl buttons.
My wedding suit lay across the bedroom floor in six pieces.
Claire stood over it holding my fabric shears.
"What did you do?"
She did not look ashamed.
"I saved Sabrina from an awkward conversation."
"Our daughter's wedding is Saturday."
"Her wedding."
Claire put the shears on the dresser.
"And her biological father is walking her down the aisle."
For a second, I thought I had heard wrong.
"Michael?"
"He represents the family better."
Calluses from thirty-two years of tailoring.
Hands that had sewn Sabrina's first Halloween costume.
Fixed prom dresses at midnight.
Signed tuition checks.
Held her when she woke from nightmares after Michael disappeared.
I had raised her since she was one year old.
Claire looked at my ruined suit.
"You'll only embarrass us."
That scared her more than shouting would have.
Then Sabrina appeared in the doorway.
I waited for her to correct her mother.
She didn't.
Instead she whispered:
"Dad... maybe it would be easier if you didn't come."
Dad.
She still called me Dad while asking me to disappear.
"I paid fifteen thousand dollars for this wedding."
"It's not about money."
"No."
"It isn't."
That night, I went to my workshop because I could not sleep.
At 1:17 a.m., voices came through the old heating vent from Claire's office upstairs.
Claire.
Sabrina.
And Michael Turner, the man who had abandoned Sabrina twenty-five years ago.
"Once Harold signs the refinance, we mortgage the house and shop together."
"He won't read the papers."
Sabrina's voice came next.
"What if he notices?"
"He still thinks this family belongs to him."
My hands went cold.
"After the wedding, we transfer the money and leave."
They thought my home and workshop were assets Claire could pledge.
They were wrong.
At 1:31 a.m., I opened the steel safe hidden behind a rack of winter coats.
Inside were the original deeds to the house.
The workshop.
And Rosewood Hall, the wedding venue.
All three belonged to the Reed Family Craft Trust.
And I was the sole trustee.
Then I checked our joint bank account.
Forty-seven thousand dollars was missing.

The first transfer had happened four months ago.
Before Michael supposedly came back into our lives.
