Chapter 6 - SABRINA'S MAILBOX

I did not accuse Sabrina immediately.

I checked.

The mailbox had been rented five months earlier.

She used it for wedding gifts and vendor paperwork.

Claire had access.

So did Michael.

I asked Sabrina to meet Miriam and me.

She came with Nathan.

My future son-in-law looked sick.

"I didn't know any of this."

I believed him because he looked at the documents before he looked at Sabrina.

Sabrina admitted she opened C.S. Holdings.

"Mom said it was for wedding refunds."

"Nine hundred thousand dollars in wedding refunds?"

"I didn't know that amount."

"Did you sign the bank resolution?"

"Without reading?"

Sabrina nodded again.

"You told me it was a honeymoon account."

"That's what Mom told me."

"Do you hear yourself?"

The room went quiet.

He loved her.

That did not make him stupid.

I asked Sabrina if Michael had ever discussed leaving Nashville after the wedding.

She went pale.

"Portugal."

"What?"

"He said he could help us buy a place there someday."

Us.

Not me.

Not Claire.

Sabrina and Nathan too.

Michael was selling everyone a different future.

Then Miriam found a beneficiary-change form for my life insurance.

Old beneficiary:

Claire.

New beneficiary:

C.S. Holdings.

My skin went cold.

"I did not sign this."

Nathan stepped away from her.

The form was dated nine days ago.

Witness:

Claire Reed.

Not Sabrina.

So my wife had forged my signature and redirected my death benefit into the account she shared with our daughter.

"Harold, there's something else."

He showed me a text from Michael.

Sent two weeks earlier.

If Harold causes trouble before Saturday, don't argue. We have a medical option.

"What medical option?"

"I thought he meant stress. A doctor. Something."

Miriam did not.

Neither did I.

Then my phone rang.

Claire.

"Where are you?"

"At the shop."

"Good. Dr. Lawson is coming by."

May you like

"Why?"

"Sabrina is worried about your memory."
