Chapter 5 - EIGHT MONTHS

Michael had been back for eight months.
He first contacted Sabrina on social media.
He apologized.
Said he was young when he left.
Said Claire kept him away.
That was a lie.
I had seen the old letters.
Claire spent years begging Michael to visit.
He ignored them.
Sabrina believed him anyway.
"I wanted to know him," she said.
"You had the right."
"You didn't need to lie to me to do it."
Her tears came.
"I thought you'd feel replaced."
"I do."
Silence.
Truth did not need decoration.
Then Sabrina admitted Michael had been talking about family image.
The wedding photographs.
Her fiancé Nathan's parents.
Political donors attending because Nathan's uncle was running for state senate.
Michael told her a tailor stepfather would make the event look smaller.
Not shame.
Never shame.
I had built clothes for judges, musicians, governors, and men who would not look me in the eye outside the fitting room.
My work had never embarrassed me.
"Mom said you wouldn't understand."
"She's right."
"I don't understand why the two people I raised with love decided appearance mattered more than loyalty."
I left before I said something cruel.
At the workshop, Miriam had news.
Turner Advisory Group was not private equity.
It was in trouble.
Three lawsuits.
Two unpaid judgments.
A federal tax lien.
Michael needed money fast.
The proposed mortgage would release $1.6 million.
Claire planned to wire $900,000 to Turner Advisory immediately after closing.
"And the rest?"
Miriam pointed.
A new account.
C.S. Holdings.
Claire Sabrina.
Mother and daughter.
My stomach dropped.
Sabrina's name was on the account.
"There were two withdrawals from your retirement account."
"Claire can't access that."
"She shouldn't."
The forms carried my signature.
Again.
Then I saw the mailing address used for the transactions.
May you like
It was not our house.
It was a private mailbox rented by Sabrina.
