Chapter 14 - PAID TO STAY AWAY

Claire said she thought she was protecting Sabrina.

Michael threatened to challenge paternity.

Demand visitation.

Create chaos.

Claire feared losing control.

So she paid him.

At first, small amounts.

Then larger.

"Why?"

"Because you'd have gone to court."

"Yes."

"I was scared."

"So you paid a man to disappear from his daughter's life."

"I thought she was better without him."

Maybe she was.

But Claire had made the choice for everyone.

Then something changed eleven months ago.

Michael stopped asking to be paid to stay away.

He wanted in.

He knew Sabrina's grandfather trust matured soon.

He told Claire he could turn it into enough money for both of them.

He also told her I had secretly planned to leave my trust to David's children instead of Sabrina.

That was false.

But Claire believed it because of an old clause she misunderstood.

Miriam explained the real trust.

After my death, the income supported Claire for life if we were still married and if she had not committed financial fraud against the trust.

After Claire, assets went to a charitable foundation for apprentices in skilled trades.

Sabrina was never a beneficiary.

She had her own family money from William Hayes.

I had intentionally kept inheritance separate from fatherhood.

"You weren't leaving it to me?"

"No."

Sabrina looked hurt, then embarrassed for being hurt.

"I raised you because I loved you, not because I was buying your loyalty with a building."

That mattered more than the trust.

"Michael told me Sabrina would get nothing unless I acted."

"So you tried to steal assets that were never hers."

No defense.

Then Cole received a warrant return from Michael's phone provider.

One deleted voice note had been recovered.

Michael was speaking to Jason.

Michael: After the wedding, move Claire first. Sabrina can stay until her trust clears.

Jason: What about Harold?

Michael: If the pills work, he won't be making decisions.

Michael continued:

If they don't, accidents happen.

Claire heard the recording.

Her face emptied.
