Chapter 16 - THE STOLEN SEAL

The stolen notary seal turned the case federal.

Mail fraud.

Bank fraud.

Identity theft.

Interstate transfers.

Michael and Jason were arrested on expanded charges.

Claire was charged too.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Attempted financial fraud.

Improper medication procurement.

She cooperated.

That would matter at sentencing.

It did not erase what she did.

Then Dr. Lawson lost his medical license pending review.

He had not joined the whole conspiracy, but he had allowed Claire to collect controlled medication for me without examining me.

Convenience became complicity.

Again.

Everyone had a smaller word for their part.

Just paperwork.

Just one pill.

Just a signature.

Just a favor.

Together, those small acts almost took my life and everything I built.

Sabrina asked if I wanted her at Claire's hearing.

"That's your mother."

"Do you?"

"No."

No punishment.

No loyalty test.

Her choice.

Then David's trust archive produced one final surprise.

Rosewood Hall had not originally belonged to my family.

My father bought it from a Black seamstress named Eleanor Price in 1978.

She had operated a formalwear shop there.

A redevelopment company pushed her out through predatory debt.

My father benefited.

Another family fortune with dirt under it.

Miriam asked what I wanted to do.

I could ignore it.

The purchase was legal.

Old.

Closed.

Instead, we found Eleanor's grandchildren.

They did not ask for the property.

They wanted their grandmother's name restored to the building.

So Rosewood Hall became:

PRICE-REED HALL.

Not charity.

Correction.

Sabrina attended the renaming.

She looked at the new plaque.

"Does every family have something like this?"

"Probably."

"What do you do with it?"

"Stop pretending the good parts cancel the bad ones."

That applied to us too.

Then Nathan arrived.

He carried no ring.

May you like

Only coffee.

That was better.
