Chapter 7 - THE MEMORY PROBLEM

Dr. Lawson had treated our family for fourteen years.
He was not a neurologist.
He was a concierge physician who liked wealthy patients.
Claire had scheduled him to evaluate my "sudden confusion."
I canceled the appointment.
Then Miriam requested my medical records.
We found a note entered two weeks earlier.
Patient's spouse reports forgetfulness, irrational financial behavior, possible paranoia.
I had never been examined.
Claire was building a competency story.
If I were declared impaired, she could petition to remove me as trustee.
"Now we know why the loan papers use Saturday."
The wedding created noise.
Family present.
A doctor available.
A forged record already started.
If I objected to the refinancing, Claire could say I was confused.
If I became angry, she could call it paranoia.
"They planned my reaction."
"Then don't give them the one they wrote."
I went home.
Claire was in the kitchen choosing flowers.
I kissed her cheek.
"You're not angry?"
"About the suit?"
"About everything."
I shrugged.
"Maybe I overreacted."
Her shoulders relaxed.
That hurt too.
She wanted the weak version of me.
So I gave it to her.
"I won't attend the ceremony."
"Thank you."
"One condition."
"I want to finish paying vendors personally."
"Why?"
"I started it. Let me finish it."
She agreed after a pause.
That gave me access to every invoice.
By midnight, I found four fake vendors.
Turner Event Logistics.
C.S. Floral Design.
Heritage Transportation.
Bright Day Consulting.
Total:
$183,000.
Money from my business line.
Money I never authorized.
Then I found the real destination.
All four vendors used the same bank.
Same branch.
Same account manager.
And the account manager's name was Jason Turner.
Michael's younger brother.
Miriam searched.
Jason Turner had been convicted of wire fraud twelve years earlier.
Then another email arrived from Elena at Rosewood.
Claire had changed the rehearsal schedule.
No Friday rehearsal.
Private "family signing" at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
May you like
One hour before the fake mortgage closing.
They were going to use the wedding venue as the place where I supposedly signed away the trust.
