Chapter 19 - CLAIRE'S LETTER

I waited three days before reading Claire's letter.

She did not ask me to visit.

Did not ask me to wait.

Did not ask me to forgive her.

She wrote about the first apartment we shared.

The sewing machine beside the kitchen table.

Sabrina asleep in a laundry basket because we could not afford a crib the first week after we married.

I used to be proud of the life we built. Somewhere along the way, I started treating other people's admiration as proof that I had not wasted my life.

That was sad.

And hers to carry.

Michael did not create the part of me that lied to you. He found it and fed it.

Accurate.

Claire wrote:

I am sorry I made Sabrina believe being chosen by a man who left mattered more than being loved by a man who stayed.

I folded the letter.

I did not write back immediately.

A month later, I sent three sentences.

I received your letter.

I hope you use your time to become someone you can live with.

I am not returning to the marriage.

No cruelty.

No door left accidentally open.

Then Sabrina turned thirty.

Her grandfather's trust became hers outright.

Two-point-four million dollars.

She did not buy Portugal.

She paid taxes.

Hired an independent adviser.

Set aside money.

Then she did something I did not expect.

She created a college fund for the children of our workshop employees.

"Because you paid for my education."

"You don't owe me."

"I know."

That made the gift different.

Then she bought one thing for herself.

A used red convertible.

Terrible financial decision.

I approved emotionally.

They were engaged again by then.

Quietly.

No announcement party.

No magazine photographer.

Sabrina came to the workshop with the ring.

"I have one request."

"No fifteen-thousand-dollar wedding?"

"Actually... no."

They wanted Price-Reed Hall.

Small ceremony.

Eighty guests.

Then she added:

"And I want you to wear the navy suit."

I looked at the repaired lapel.

The seam was still there.

May you like

"So people can see it?"

"So I can."
