Chapter 3 - MICHAEL TURNER

Michael Turner arrived at my workshop wearing a suit that cost more than my first car.
That had always been his skill.
He had charm without responsibility.
Beauty without weight.
He walked around the cutting table.
"Still doing all this by hand?"
"Some things last longer that way."
"I heard about the wedding issue."
"What issue?"
"You attending."
"My daughter asked me not to."
Michael corrected me.
"Our daughter."
I let the silence sit.
He had not changed a diaper.
Paid a doctor bill.
Taken her to school.
Sat beside her through pneumonia.
But biology had given him confidence.
"Sabrina wants a clean picture."
"A clean picture?"
"Her real father walking her down the aisle."
I looked at my hands again.
"Don't take it personally."
Then Michael placed a folder on the table.
Refinance documents.
"Claire said you might need help understanding the structure."
There it was.
I flipped through casually.
"You've done well."
"Private equity."
"Turner Advisory?"
"You've heard of it?"
"Bank statement."
A mistake.
Too early.
Michael recovered.
"Claire hired me for wedding-related asset planning."
"Four months ago?"
Silence.
"Sabrina said you reconnected six weeks ago."
Michael's eyes hardened.
"Families reconnect privately."
"Apparently."
Then I asked why the loan used Rosewood Hall.
"Unused equity is wasted equity."
"Who owns Rosewood?"
Michael shrugged.
"You and Claire."
Wrong.
The trust did.
He did not know.
That was useful.
Before he left, Michael said:
"Saturday can be easy, Harold. Stay home. Let Sabrina have the family she wants."
I looked at the suit hanging behind him.
An old gray jacket I had made for Sabrina's high-school debate final.
She wore it because she said it made her feel brave.
"Maybe she should."
He mistook that for surrender.
After he left, I called Rosewood manager Elena Ruiz.
"Do not cancel the wedding."
She sounded surprised.
"Was someone trying to?"
"Not yet."
Then Elena said something that changed the plan.
"Claire already asked me to change the ownership contact."
"To whom?"
"Michael Turner."
"When?"
"Three months ago."
Before Michael had supposedly returned.
May you like
Then Elena added:
"She said you were preparing to sell."
