Chapter 11 - DAVID'S WARNING

David Reed never trusted Claire completely.
That hurt.
I had defended her for years.
The letter explained why.
Before David died, Claire asked whether marrying me gave her rights to Rosewood Hall.
David told her no.
The trust predated our marriage.
Then she asked what would happen if I became incapacitated.
Date:
Thirteen years ago.
Not eleven months.
Not Michael.
Claire had thought about trust control long before he returned.
Miriam watched me absorb it.
"That doesn't mean she planned this for thirteen years."
"No."
But it meant the question was not new.
David wrote:
I hope I am wrong about the reason she asked. If I am not, remember love does not require you to surrender stewardship.
I sat alone in the workshop after everyone left.
The ruined wedding suit was in a box beside the cutting table.
I took out the front panel.
Claire had cut straight through the hand-stitched lapel.
Hours of work destroyed in one squeeze.
That was our marriage in miniature.
She had not built it.
So she did not understand what cutting it cost.
No makeup.
No wedding dress.
"Can I come in?"
I almost said no. Instead:
"Yes."
She looked at the suit pieces.
"I'm sorry."
"For the suit?"
"For all of it."
"I wanted Michael to want me."
There it was.
Not glamour.
Not status.
The old wound.
A father who left.
A daughter who grew up wondering why.
Michael returned and offered an answer:
He had always wanted her.
Someone else kept him away.
The lie was cruel because it touched exactly where she hurt.
"You were allowed to want him."
"I wasn't allowed to punish you for being the one who stayed."
That was closer to an apology.
Not enough.
But closer.
"There's something else."
"Michael asked me to sign a document last month."
"What document?"
"He said it was for genealogy."
Sabrina took out her phone.
The document title:
PATERNITY ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND SUCCESSOR BENEFICIARY NOTICE.
Miriam read it later and went silent.

If valid, it could give Michael a claim against a different trust.
One I did not know existed.
