Chapter 13 - WHAT SABRINA SAID

Sabrina gave a full statement.

Eight hours.

Every message.

Every form.

Every lie she repeated because she wanted it to be true.

She admitted asking me not to attend the wedding.

She admitted laughing once when Michael called my workshop "the costume room."

That one hurt.

She did not hide it.

Good.

Accountability should cost something.

Then she told Cole about a storage unit Michael rented outside Murfreesboro.

He said it held childhood gifts he had saved for her.

Police obtained a warrant.

No gifts.

Boxes of financial records.

Fake seals.

Blank trust forms.

Copies of my signature.

Copies of Claire's.

Copies of Sabrina's.

And files from three other families.

Michael had done versions of this before.

Target a family with fractured relationships.

Return as rescuer.

Create paperwork.

Move money.

Leave.

One file involved a widow in Knoxville.

Another a retired contractor in Louisville.

The third name stopped me.

JOSEPH REED.

My cousin.

He lost his house six years ago after a "business refinance."

I had thought he made a bad investment.

Michael Turner had been there too.

Under another consulting company.

This was not a desperate one-time theft.

It was a pattern.

Then investigators found a photograph.

Michael and Claire together.

Dated twelve years earlier.

At a hotel bar in Atlanta.

Claire had told me she was at a teacher conference that weekend.

"Mom knew him then?"

Of course she knew him.

He was Sabrina's biological father.

But Claire had always said they had no contact after Sabrina was a baby.

The photo proved otherwise.

Then another.

Ten years ago.

Seven.

Four.

Michael had not truly disappeared from Claire's life.

He had disappeared only from Sabrina's.

I felt something colder than jealousy.

Claire had let our daughter grow up believing Michael abandoned everyone.

But Claire had kept a private connection.

Why?

When Cole asked her, Claire finally answered.

"Because he asked me for money."

For twenty-four years, Michael returned whenever he needed cash.

And Claire paid him to stay away.
