Chapter 18 - JOSEPH'S ANSWER

Joseph was right.

I hated that.

He had lost his house because Michael manipulated a refinance years earlier.

I wanted to fix it with money.

Joseph wanted something else.

"Testify about what happened."

"I already did."

"Not the fraud."

He pointed at me.

"The shame."

Michael succeeded because families hid embarrassment.

Debt.

Divorce.

Absent fathers.

Bad signatures.

People stayed quiet because they did not want neighbors to know.

Joseph had stayed quiet.

Claire had stayed quiet.

Sabrina had stayed quiet.

I had stayed quiet about how much her rejection broke me.

So I spoke at a financial-abuse forum hosted at Price-Reed Hall.

Not as a hero.

As a man who nearly signed nothing and still almost lost everything because the people closest to him assumed he would not look.

"Trust is not the same as refusing to verify."

That sentence became a workshop rule.

We began offering free document-review nights for small business owners and older homeowners.

Miriam brought law students.

I brought coffee.

Sabrina volunteered sometimes.

She never called it redemption.

Good.

Redemption is not a shift you clock into.

Nathan came too.

Months passed.

He and Sabrina started dating again.

Slowly.

No engagement.

One evening Sabrina found the repaired navy suit hanging in my workshop.

"You fixed it."

"Mostly."

A thin seam remained visible along the left lapel.

She touched it.

"Why didn't you replace the whole panel?"

"I could have."

"Then why leave the line?"

"Because repaired doesn't mean untouched."

"If I ever get married, would you come?"

"Would you want me there?"

"Yes."

"Then yes."

"And would you walk me down the aisle?"

I did not answer immediately.

Not to punish her.

Because the question deserved weight.

Finally:

"If that's what you still want when the day comes."

"It is."

I believed she meant it that day.

That was enough.

Then my phone buzzed.

A letter had arrived from Claire.
