Chapter 12 - THE OTHER TRUST

The other trust belonged to Sabrina's maternal grandfather.

Claire's father, William Hayes.

He died when Sabrina was six.

His estate created a fund for "the biological descendants of Claire Hayes Reed."

Sabrina was the only known beneficiary.

Value:

$2.4 million.

Claire had never told me. Neither had William.

The trust was controlled by an outside bank until Sabrina turned thirty.

Her thirtieth birthday was in five months.

Michael's paternity acknowledgment would allow him to petition as her biological parent for access to records and possibly challenge past management decisions.

Not ownership.

But leverage.

Michael had exaggerated the legal effect.

Again.

He made people sign papers by selling them a future they did not understand.

Sabrina stared at the trust statement.

"Mom knew?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Because Claire had been withdrawing "health and education" distributions for years.

Some legitimate.

Some not.

Forty thousand went to our household after my workshop fire.

Claire told me the money came from her savings.

It did not.

Another sixty thousand went to a failed boutique she never told me about.

Then $210,000 moved over the past eleven months.

To Turner Advisory.

"So they were using my money too."

Not just mine.

That mattered.

Michael had not returned for love.

He returned because Sabrina was approaching thirty and the trust would soon become transparent to her.

He needed to get ahead of the records.

Michael's real financial problem was worse than we knew.

He owed nearly three million dollars to investors.

Some were suing.

One was dangerous enough that federal agents had opened a separate extortion case.

Michael was trying to create cash before his creditors caught him.

Claire was not his partner.

She was liquidity.

So was I.

So was Sabrina.

Then the bank produced a recording.

A call between Michael and an account manager.

"Once the old man is out, Claire signs everything."

The manager asked:

"And Sabrina?"

"She'll sign whatever makes her feel chosen."

Sabrina listened.

Her face did not move.

Then she asked me to play it again.

I did.

This time she did not cry.

"I want to testify."
