Chapter 10 - MONICA'S SECRET

Ava understood only when Naomi opened Bellmere’s financial records.

The event company had been quietly receiving unusually large contracts from Langford Development for two years.

Monica had access to guest lists, travel schedules and private donor information.

Damian had been using Bellmere to collect information on wealthy clients.

Ava’s job had placed her in rooms Sterling North wanted to study. Without knowing it, she had been a doorway.

Ava felt physically ill.

Lucian looked furious.

“Your company assigned you to every Vale event in the last six months.”

Ava remembered.

Three product launches.

A museum dinner.

A charity auction.

She had thought Monica trusted her.

Instead Monica was positioning her.

“Did Damian ask her to hire me?”

Naomi searched.

“Yes.”

Ava laughed softly.

Lucian said, “This is not your fault.”

“I know.”

He looked surprised.

Ava did too.

Police began searching for Damian. The stolen twenty-eight million was dangerous; the archive worried Lucian more.

“What’s in the archive?”

“Private financial information.”

“On who?”

“Several companies. Including mine.”

Ava’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Ava.”

Damian.

Her whole body tightened.

“Where are you?”

“You really think I’m going to answer that?”

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Lucian reached for the phone.

Ava pulled away.

Damian continued.

“You have the laptop.”

“Yes.”

“Bring it to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what’s on it.”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don’t.”

His voice lowered.

“Your father is on it.”

Ava froze.

Her father had died when she was fourteen.

“What?”

Lucian saw her face.

Damian said, “Ask Vale why he never told you who your father worked for.”

Ava looked at Lucian. For the first time since their deal, he looked away.

And Ava knew he had broken the one rule that mattered.

He had lied.
